Re: Fire at former Alfred Knights laboratory

Yes, I remember the place well, I lived nearby in Scholes Lane at the time. So I used to nip home after I visited the Grange for a quick cuppa! Sad to see how its ended up - just a pile of ashes

Fire at former Alfred Knights laboratory

Just reading about the fire at what was Alfred Knights, Prescot Road, last night. I used to visit the labs there for Pilks in the early 60s taking glass samples from Ravenhead works. Sad to see it go up in flames and wondering what will happen to the site now. Looks like it was a huge fire

Re: Soccer and Tennis on TV

I enjoy the tennis at Wimbledon. It's only on for two weeks and it's still a competitive sport bringing a lot of pleasure to some of us. I've even watched the football this year, though that's more to do with not being able to get out so much due to old age.. and the goddamn hot weather!

Re: This unseasonably hot weather

Same here...the past few days have been a nightmare from the heat, this morning it was a pleasure waking up and feeling the cooler air. Just hoping it's gone for good

Re: Talbot

I didn't know the Talbot had closed. It was a favourite pub in the early 60s where we'd go in the 'interval' from the Plaza ballroom. Duggie Greenall had it then.. he became landlord of a few other pubs around town later on. He also had the Victoria in the market at a later date as well as a couple ...

Re: Postal cock-ups

My main concern about the post recently is that I only get maybe one or two deliveries per week from Royal Mail. I used to get post 3/4 times per week a few years ago. Are they on strike?

Kings speech

Any thoughts on the King's speech in the US yesterday. I'm wondering if Trump got to hear the Kings real message about his shenanigans recently or if it totally passed over his head

Re: The Gamble, awarded a grant

I loved that library. My grandfather took me in there as a child where he'd read the free newpapers and I'd find myself a book to read. Many years later I did a beginners computer course there and discovered the internet which has kept me entertained ever since.
We lost a great institution when ...

The Gamble, awarded a grant

I heard The Gamble has been awarded a grant. What will it be used for when it eventually reopens?

It was more about being told we (the catholics) were superior. We belonged to the one true faith while all others were false or fake. It fostered a sense of difference between us kids, yet we played together quite happily totally unaware of these 'differences'

Re: King and Pope praying together in Vatican?

Yes, it had a similar impact on me.. I was indoctrinated as a young catholic girl to look upon CoE church and its believers as heathens!

Re: Lost relatives

I tried it for a month last year and discovered that I could group some matches together, but it didn't really offer me any new matches. The tree errors didn't make much sense either unless one was really into the nitty-gritty of tree building. I suppose it's worth a months sub to give it a whirl

I see the ruling to throw out the asylum seekers from the Bell Hotel has been overturned. That'll not delight the drunken mobs protesting outside

Not me - I never watched the soaps, I like docs or tv that teaches me about things. I'm also sick of the news - nothing but people killing each other or trying to :(

I made an appointment for a modern one but was advised not to waste my money. My NHS one works perfectly and I get free batteries and checks if anything goes wrong

Rain!

I was delighted to see the rain last night, my garden has turned into a desert these past weeks. Hoping for some more so I can try to save newly bought plants. Apparently, it's been the dryest sunniest Spring for years

I used to queue up with Mum for pies for Granddad but wasn't a fan myself. I think it was the idea of eating the flesh of a pig! Not the religious sort, just a cute baby piglet :)

Finally got to see Adolescence tonight, it was excellent! I'd heard so much about it already but Stephen Graham is usually worth watching. It was eye-opening showing what goes on behind the scenes in these types of situations. Great viewing!

Re: Films and dramas that you've watched lately

Just started reading Conclave, Robert Harris's novel I'm struggling to get my head around the titles they use in the catholic church (even though I'm a former member). It's well-written though so I'll stick with it
