Lost relatives

Post by Strollby »

Do not mean the ones you can not find in the records but, the miserable, ill-mannered sods who can not be bothered to answer polite queries on relationship matches etc, on the various sites such as Ancestry. Even worse, the ones who are happy to milk your hard-earned research then drop you when your info runs dry.

It has always been this way, and it will likely continue to be so. Some people want an instant family tree and have little patience.

My strategy faced a setback. For years, the idea was that when the subscription was nearing its end, you'd simply cancel, and then once the sub had expired, you'd use the 50% discount link to renew on the worldwide plan. Well, that worked again. However, I had also been subscribing to Pro Tools for £4.99 per month. I should have paused Pro Tools before cancelling my membership, as that action cancels Pro Tools automatically. I'm sure that this is a recent change because it didn't happen last time, but the same thing had happened to other friends and acquaintances. So watch out. It means that if you resubscribe to Pro Tools, the price is £7.99 instead of £4.99.

Hi Dave, and, obviously, no rush in getting back but, do you think Pro Tools is good value? Been thinking of getting it but wasn't sure if it helps much.
Cheers

It depends how deep you want to go, really. The tree tools point out errors or duplicates. and you see a lot more shared matches with DNA. It's probably worth doing it for a month to see what you think, and then if you think it's worth it, you keep it going until it isn't. When my normal subs run out in March, I'll be giving it all a break; maybe forever, I don't know. I'm quite disappointed with the way they've fragmented the user base; plus, it doesn't seem as though there's much more I might find out about.

I tried it for a month last year and discovered that I could group some matches together, but it didn't really offer me any new matches. The tree errors didn't make much sense either unless one was really into the nitty-gritty of tree building. I suppose it's worth a months sub to give it a whirl

I'll give it a go for a month, to tidy things up if nothing else. I use Ancestry mostly for WW1 research and to see if there's crossovers into my tree.
