St Teresa of Avila Parish, Newtown, St Helens founded 1925

The foundation stone was laid by Bishop Dobson on 12th Sept 1926. Does anyone know when the RC Church was completed and opened? It was never Consecrated but a previous report on this group mentioned a photo of an Archbishop outside the Church. Does anyone have a copy of this photo and any information please?                                                                     Maybe these dates might help. Archbishop Keating died 7/2/1928 and Bishop Downey was made Archbishop of Liverpool  in August 1928.

Online I found an article in the Nottingham and Midland Catholic news dated May 28th 1927 as below

Dedication at St. Helens.
A new church dedicated to St. Teresa was opened at Newton, St. Helens, on Sunday, by Archbishop Keating, of Liverpool. Twenty-nine years ago the late Fr. Hearne built in the district an elenientary school, in which Mass was celebrated on Sundays, and a couple of years since the district was separated from the parish of the Sacred Heart into an independent mission. Now it has a large temporary church. His Grace in the course of his sermon said that in erecting the temporary church they had put the crown on their efforts for the time being, and in years to come no doubt a church as beautiful as any of their old Catholic churches would be built.

Thank you so much for that information Tony! It will help me research local newspaper articles on the opening.  Lots of detail in the article.                                                          The parish will be 100 years old in 2025 and I am pulling together information about the Parish. A new church was built and opened 1965.

very grateful CON

@CON My grandparents on my Dad's side and my gt grandparents  on my Mum's side were Founders of the High Altar, I have the cards they were given. I do know about the new church as my aunt took me me to the opening, I was only small and all I can remember seeing is the top of the Archbishop's Throne draped in red velvet.

I have sent a private message in case there is anything else I can help out with
