I have letters of administration granted to my greatx3 grandfather after his daughter died a spinster and intestate.

Also on the form granting the letters of administration was a section for sureties. Listed were my greatx3 grandfather was his son and his son in law.

Anyone know what the duties ,if any, were of these named as sureties?

Simply put - sureties were the people who oversaw the instructions of the will were carried out, or in the case of there being no will, making sure the estate was administered fairly and there were no assets hidden or thieved by the person sorting out the estate.
