I  am looking at William Cross watch tool maker  and  a Brewer. He had a house built in 1777 called the Malt House in St Helens which is still standing. He was a trustee of the New Chapel Baldwin St St Helens  Married to Tabitha Fenny ,it was his father in law who left him the land where the house was built.

Their children were baptised  at  the New Chapel William 11 Sept 1741 Mary 2 Nov 1744 Henry 26 Dec 1746 James 24 April 1752.

My ancestor was James Cross  watchmaker married to Elizabeth Wainwright 1788 Farnworth  St Wilfrid . I am looking  to see if there is a connection with William Cross to James.

Does any one have any information .

many thanks Colin Cross

Hi Archery/Colin Cross

Haven't been on in a while and doing some catching up. William Cross and Elizabeth Wainwright are my 4th great grandparents - all their family are baptised/married and buried in St Marys, Prescot Church of England. The New Chapel was an Independent Chapel so I don't think the two families are the same (at least in that generation!)

James could well be the son of William Cross of Windle , baptised at New Chapel Independent April 1752, he would have been about 26 at his marriage to Elizabeth at Farnworth but there isn't much info to prove it. If you could find the children of James he may have called one of them Tabitha and the first son William which would help.

Anywho, this may be interesting to you, Marriage bonds and allegations for William and Tabitha, says his father was Nicholas Cross of Rainhill a Carpenter.

I have James and Elizabeth (nee Wainwright) children as Jane(1792), William (1795), Elizabeth(1798), Robert (1806, my 3rd great grandfather) and James(1810). There is another Robert Cross born 1807 so I have no definite link as it could be either?  I opted for this one as both James (father) and William are watchmakers
