taylor park paddling pool around 1957

Recommended Posts

It was hugely popular when I was a kid but in the early 1950s a rumour, probably totally false, circulated that linked it to what was then called Infantile Paralysis but what we now call Polio. It's popularity declined rapidly

Yes, I recall hearing the same at that time - thankfully I had probably grown out of the paddling pool by then and had moved onto Boundary Rd. baths. The memories of paddling in that pool though and spending time there in the summer holidays have lasted a lifetime

Do you remember the motor launch called the "Queen Mary" that took folk around the main lake at 3d a trip for kids and 6d for adults?

My uncle Charlie made me a sailing boat for Christmas. I was disappointed to discover the keel was longer than the depth of the paddling pool. Later the pool was a testing strip for boats I made powered by jetex. Old men who sat round the pool were well impressed.

What happened to the rowing boats on the lake? Are people still allowed to swim in it? I spent many an afternoon swimming across the lake or sunning on the grass. Changing room was upstairs in the boat house.

No swimming in the park for a long time Bert, it's banned in the large lake and the little pool is now concreted over for bikes/skateboards

Taylor Park is disgusting now compared to what it used to be all those years ago. No soul, no heart and no life. 😪
