Ancestry new features - news, etc.

They keep on rolling out little new features - usually appearing as being 'beta', so you're never quite sure if they'll be permanent additions or if they'll change or be removed.

A couple of interesting ones specific to the trees you own come under the 'Activity' tab on the tree page. Recent Changes reminds you what you've done lately - or shows you any changes that any editors that you've allowed on your tree have made. I'd already figured out that each change must be logged because how else would FTM or RootsMagic know what to update in the synchronisation, but now they're letting us see some of that log.

Under that option is a new one called Recent Viewers. This one shows you how many people have looked at your tree lately, plus if you and those viewers have enabled a setting in the account then you'll be able to see who those viewers are. That could work out to be handy because if they're distant relations who might be reluctant to use the messaging then you can head over to their public tree (if they have any) to have a look.

Another one that you mightn't have noticed yet is that you can now have more than two people in a message conversation. You can't add new participants to existing conversations - which is understandable, but if you start a new conversation then you can address it to multiple participants.

Another thing that I noticed yesterday is that when you're in pedigree or family view on a tree then the behaviour is changed when you click on an individual in the tree, it doesn't do what it used to do - like going to the person profile, rather it opens a menu on the right-hand side of the tree where more options, like edit person and view profile are accessed - along with hints you can look at or reject. This is a bit of a radical change that may cause some annoyance until you're used to it.

Feel free to add any new changes you might have noticed - or to comment on these observations.

For people who were 'in the know' regarding the existence of the old 50% membership discount page, then you might be disappointed to find that it has been removed. I was. I was considering a boycott, but then news went around that you can still request that discount if you talk to them - using the chat or phoning them. How long that will last remains to be seen, but it's something to think about if you don't fancy forking out full price. IMO there should be a discount for people who are providing a lot of their work and content for the site.

BLOGS.ANCESTRY.CO.UK

Ancestry®, the global leader in Family History, has been awarded the exclusive rights to digitise and publish more...

My question is as to whether this will be a part of a normal subscription or exclusive to 'Fold3'.

Thanks for pointing out the new features on Ancestry, Dave. I wish they'd make it clear on the main page or somewhere prominent when this happens for those of us not as efficient as others. I've been a member for about 20 years and often there's info there I hadn't known about

And the one thing that they don't want to give us is a chromosome browser - like is available with MH, GedMatch and others. There are other handicaps like not showing the amount of shared DNA the people in the shared matches have with the actual matches and the 20 cM cut off. They're far too busy with 'ethnicity' and the 'ethnicity communities' - which is just fluff and OT as far as features people actually want...

Interesting. Hey did you know that next year Ancestry will  start to have British second world war military service records ? 2024-2029 they will upload them.

Lets hope they don't go to Fold3 for pay per view

It's gone back to how it used to be with the small pop-up. I assume that there were complaints.

Have you seen the recent new stuff on Ancestry?

Off the top of the head, new features on the tree include 'fan view'. It used to be that there was Pedigree view (renamed horizontal) and Family view (renamed vertical) and now there's this other Fan view, which shows all of the ancestors that you've gathered so far in a sort of circular fashion. That isn't a new concept but it is new for Ancestry trees. The Fan View is 'beta' meaning that they haven't quite decided whether it is a regular feature yet. As it is now, you can see four generations from the selected person, but a few days ago you could increase that view up to seven generations, but now it is fixed at four. Is it really any use? Well, you can get a clear view of gaps, but anyone who is even semi-serious will know about those anyway.

The tree interface as a whole has been tarted up a bit with settings where you can toggle things on and off - like little icons for when there are comments on a person profile, if you've marked somebody as a DNA match, or if there are hints to be checked. There's also the icon for if there are any ThruLine hints. As a whole the tree interface does seem better.

ThruLines on the DNA interface seemed to be a good idea a while ago, with speculated routes or maps showing how your connection to a match might work. It's all based on user trees though, and whether they're using some kind of AI or if there are some people are employed to make those guesses, it is a bit of a mystery. But they used to be good, with a caveat that the guesses may be based on junk trees. I found that quite a few of those predictions were correct, but lately there are more and more rubbish predictions.

The parental split in DNA matches - maternal, paternal, or unassigned, is now a subscription-only feature. Whether that'll encourage more people to pay, we'll see, but as I previously mentioned, there are still many waiting to be assigned (and some are assigned wrong). Something new is that your most recent matches will mostly be assigned as they appear.

Has anyone else noticed anything new?

Oh - someone else has noticed that the ThruLines are a mess.

Right now, ThruLines at Ancestry is one hot mess. Aside from the inherent frustration, especially over a holiday weekend when many people had planned to work on their genealogy, I’d like to say, “d…

I don't really get going on Ancestry until the dark nights kick in as plenty to do outside until then.

Thrulines can be very frustrating when it's wrong and there doesn't seem to be any way to get rid of certain suggestions.

I am still working through low cm matches and most have no shared matches and no or very small trees so no help at all.

Been stuck for a long time now on some ancestors so hoping for breakthroughs soon!
