I remember The Castle & The Funfair, especially the Helter Skelter in the 50's/60's.

Yes, that explains it. My memory of Carr mill is from when I was about 13 or 14, (1955/6) when I used to go fishing there.  I imagine the funfair was late 1950s onwards. The only other memory of the place that I have must have been late 1940s or very early 1950s because I can recall being taken on a mini-railway trip that went up to the old boat-house

I recall the funfair and helter-skelter well. I also remember watching the puppet show Punch & Judy when I was young, then when I was about 18 I'd go to the dances there at the Cats Whiskers. Great memories of Carr Mill - such a pity it's all gone now

A late friend of mine told me that her grandfather used to keep a pub where Burtons used to be. He sadly died of typhoid during the epidemic.

Where in St Helens was the last photo?

I think that might be "St. Helens" in the "Isle of Wight". :dunno:

Anyway back to the real stuff...........

This is 1961, as the film What A Carve Up was out then.......it stared Sid James, Kenneth Connor and Shirley Eaton.

Hi Phyll, the pub on Church Street was called the Black Bull and the landlord I am talking about was named James Hodson He moved to the Black Bull from the George and Dragon which was in Bold Street.James died from Asiatic Cholera and is buried in St. Thomas graveyard in Hewitt Avenue. Hope this helps. Regards H. ps I think there is a picture of both pubs on Paul Cotham's pub site.
