Ah, the St Helens I remember. Terraced houses, narrow streets and back alleyways. Looks like some of it in that photo is in the early stages of demolition

There was an old lady lived opposite us in Speakman Rd, Grace Dilliway, she was postmistress there in 1939 and being born in 1894 would have retired about 1954 assuming she didn't leave before then.

Lathom's chippy had a poster inside it said,

I had no shoes and complained, until I met a man wno had no feet.

I have never forgotten it.

Remember when there were three chippies near the top of the Green? Stan Lathoms, Knowles's in Windleshaw Road and another just a block away and whose name escapes me. When we were about 14 the big dare was to buy the chips at Lathom's and then go into Knowles's and the other one to use their salt and vinegar. What hateful kids we were!
