Rivington aqueduct was constructed in the mid 19th century wasn't it? The date on the pic says 1955. I suppose they might be repairing it, but the pipe visible looks like a concrete sewer pipe rather than a cast iron water pipe.

That pub sign always struck me as a half-arsed compromise between correct English and Lancashire/St Helens dialect. It should surely have been "Bird in th'and" or "Bird i' th'and"

I admired those old church's around St Helens when I was young. They were impressive and stately. Never was allowed inside one though - it was banned for us catholics to enter a church which was not of the catholic faith. Shame really... I looked on them as something grand and impressive but never was brave enough to set foot inside. By the time I plucked up the courage they'd nearly all been knocked down
