Ah, the Oxford Picture House, later to become the Plaza Nightclub. The Oxford, known throughout St Helens as Th'ockie,  was a hugely popular Saturday afternoon venue for us kids. Certainly downmarket from the Palladium (Plad) and Capitol cinemas but cheaper!

The Ockie had a raised seated area, under the protectionist room, at the back with a walkway separating it from the main seating area. You paid a few extra pennies to sit there. The extra cost was well worth it as you were less likely to be hit by missiles on a Saturday morning. Buster Crab( 400m Olympic Swimming gold medalist) as Flash Gordon, and Johnny Weismuller( 100m Olympic Swimming gold medallist and 1st man under 60sec.) as Tarzan were my favourites.

The Ockie was my first experience of cinema. My big sister was in charge. We had seats in the lower section and the audience of youngsters turned in their seats to look up to what I now know was the projectionist. The lights went down and a shaft of light appeared. Ten minutes later my sister told me I was looking in the wrong direction .

When you say they are jaywalking, do you mean they should be on the sidewalk?

My late wife would have loved that photo of the Art Room. She attended Cowley Girls School in the 1950s, adored her art lessons there and went on to teach art herself
