Several St Helens takeaways ordered to improve their food hygiene - Liverpool Echo WWW.LIVERPOOLECHO.CO.UK Several restaurants and takeaways have been slapped with the poor rating
Alan
The pies that I enjoyed in the 1950s and 60s in St Helens were from Skellands at the bottom of Duke Street and Whittles about halfway up Duke Street
Glasstowner
I always thought Pimmies had too much pepper in their pies - but I did like their little chocolate box cakes a lot!

Brianza
Anybody remember Sammy Lievesleys in Charles St? There was a queue every lunchtime.
halj
Used to go to the Saints with Sammy's brother and would call at the shop on the way home. He would have a couple of warm pies waiting for us and one to take home. That would be when I was about 12 years old (1950).
mishka
I just wish I could get pies full stop!!! They don't do proper pies here, of any sort, unless you count the so called Melton Mowbray pork pies Tesco sell - never been anywhere near Melton Mowbray - taste foul. There are steak/kidney ham/chicken etc - but proper meat & tattie pies - not a chance. Pork pies? non existent, make my own if the craving gets really bad. I seem to choose places to live where meat& tattie pies are unknown - Greece - nowt. France - nowt! Here - nowt. Woe is me😭
FRANK
there's a bloke on YT - John Kirkwood's his name - he's a retired baker from Geordieland and he shows how to make really tasty pies and pasties. I've tried his recipes and am well please with the results.
HORT
I have never eaten a purchased pie for very many years, That is because you do not know what is in them. Sausages the same.
Alan
The local butcher's wife in the next village does some great pies; steak, pork, steak and black-pudding, sausage rolls from their own Cumberland sausage and so on but never a meyt and tater pie. I'll be in there on Wednesday and I'll find out why not
Bert
After eating pies from a local shop I used to get terrible pain. At first I thought the pies were iffy. After describing my symptoms to the doc. he said, "So you think you've got gaul stones". I knew you were supposed to be fair, fat and forty to have gaul stones and since I only had two of these qualities I ruled out this possibility. And that's why I never became a doctor.
