RIERA , VARLEY , HALSALL

I am a great grandson of Luis RIERA who immigrated to New Zealand as a 19 year old in 1894.

I am trying to obtain family contacts,  information and photos about the following ancestors  -

Joseph (Jose) RIERA b 1845 in Spain, father of Luis. He worked and apparently was injured in an explosion at one of the Varley foundrys.

Barbara VARLEY b 1843 in Prescot, wife of Joseph Riera and mother of Luis.

Jesse VARLEY b 1810 in St Helens, father of Barbara Varley.

Barbara HALSALL b 1809 in St Helens, mother of Barbara Varley.

Any suggestions for searching the above families and information about Varley foundrys in the 1800s  will be welcomed.

Thank-you, Alan Scott

Hi Alan,

Do you have access to Ancestry ?

Jesse Varley b 1810 is 45 Family Trees although cannot guarantee that the trees are accurate.

You can view them on Search Public members Trees

Thanks for your help John.

I have a friend who uses Ancestry so will contact her in a couple of weeks when we come out of CV lockdown.

Unrelated to my family search there seems to be a lot of interesting history on this site. I'm looking forward to exploring it and learning a few things about your area.

Regards, Alan

Just found a booklet issued by 'St Helens Townships Family History Society' a few years ago. It lists graves of people of interest interred in St Helens Cemetery. George Pilkington Varley is in Section 11, grave No 80. He is listed as 'Industrialist and owner of Varleys Iron works. Buried 1st January 1927 aged 59 years. There is a photo of a grave with an imposing headstone (crucifix) but I don't know how to post photos, sorry

added 24 minutes later

*cross* - not a crucifix

Hi kizzy,

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I really appreciate the support I have received the past few days.

I will explore the St Helens Townships Family History Society and see what assistance they provide.

Regards, Alan

All good here in Hawkes Bay. In fact, I think we're very lucky to be where we are right now. Take care.
