The Shaw Family Of Ashton-u-Lyne, Leigh & St. Helens

George Shaw

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm new here and would like to pick your brains! sad2.gif

I'm researhing a family of brewers called Shaw. They emanated from Ashton-u-Lyne. William Shaw (1822-1889), of Ashton, successfully ran the Dukinfield Brewery. He was head hunted by a failing brewery in Leigh known as the Bedford Brewing and Malting Company. He is widely accredited with turning round the fortunes of this enterprise.

William had five sons and three daughters. One son, Joseph Lockwood Shaw (1850-?), had in 1889 inherited from his father the Woodside Brewery situated in Salford. In the 1891 Census, Joseph is shown living in Pendleton, Salford of status 'Retired Brewer'. He was living with his wife, Harriet Ann (Jones) and three children, Joseph (jnr) (b. 1878 in Ashton-u-Lyne), Elizabeth (Cissie) (b. 1883 in Tyldesley), and Ethel Shaw (b. 1889 in Salford). Details of this family post this census become sparse.

What I do know, is that Joseph (jnr) and his two sisters were living in Moat House, St. Helens by 1900. This information I found in a news story regarding the death of an uncle on the Isle of Man that year. Following this, I can only find Joseph (jnr) in 1911 listed as a confectioner at 23 Corporation Street, St. Helens, living with wife Annie (b. 1876 in St. Helens), and four children..Joseph (b. 1899 in Ashton-u-Lyne), Harry Lionel Shaw (b. 1901 in Bold), Ethel Doris Shaw (b. 1905 in St. Helens) and William Lockwood Shaw (b. 1907 in St. Helens).

I'd welcome any information at all on this family but am particularly interested in Joseph Lockwood Shaw and his wife Harriet Ann (Jones). When and where did they die? Did they emigrate?

I think Ive found their trail George and will get back with something soon

Joseph Lockwood Shaw was born Ashton Under Lyne in 1850 and he married Harriet Anne Jones in the same place in June quarter of 1888 for starters, this is from the Indexes, no marriage record has been found yet (online that is)

I think I confused myself with this lot so make sure you check everything out for yourself. I noticed you have done some work online yourself after I'd got most of this and I don't really have much more to add. Ill keep looking around though.

What I managed to understand from census and a few other record sets is the following:
William Shaw born 1822 in possibly Hebden bridge, Cheshire (he later changes this to Ashton under Lyne) his father was James Shaw
He married on 5th March 1848 at St Mary, Oldham to Elizabeth Lockwood born 1825 in Lepton, Yorkshire. The Banns are available on familysearch, her father was Joseph Lockwood and she had a sister called Margaret, more of her later.

They lived in Ashton under Lyne in 1851 at Red Lon Ashton Town, father brewers traveller beer seller, mother, James their son age 3 and Joseph Lockwood I assume, aged 1 along with Mary Grade a servant born in Ireland.
In 1861 they are near the Station Hotel in Ashton Town. William 39 a brewer employing 15 Elizabeth his wife and the following kids. James 12 Joseph 10 William 8 Hannah 6 Mary 4 Martha 3 George 11months. Also Margaret Lockwood age 4 born Lepton Yorkshire ( Elizabeths sister ? but why is she listed as visitor, servant?) Also interestingly, Margaret Ann Pennington 20 servant born St Helens.
In 1871 Elizabeth at least is in Ashton, Currier Lane, Bank Top House she is married to a brewer it says and she is head of house, where is William?
Joseph a brewer, William a clerk, Hannah Mary Martha George Harry age 8 all born A-u-L , also Emma Nettleship visitor Wakefield born and Mary Burne servant Shropshire born
Three of these children were baptised all together on 17 December 1879 in A-U-L Hannah Mary and Martha , both parents names are given (familysearch)
In 1881 William turns up in Bedford, Brewery Lane, Leigh a 59 year old Brewer and widow, also with him is Joseph a Maltster (unmarried) and his brother George 20 a brewer, also Margaret Lockwood again, unmarried servant age 59. Too many choices for the death of Eliza, you would have to enlist thehelp of the registrar or search the cemeteries. death in the range 1879-1881 I reckon.
William dies in 1889 at Bank Top House, there is a will which you know of. Had a quick look around for these burials but dont have access to records for that area and would take me a while to find my way, sorry nothing came up.
On to the first Joseph (Lockwood Shaw born 1850 in A-u-L) found the index of the birth you probably have it right?
He lives at his parents home until after 1881 and is listed as unmarried although from what the child Joseph no 2 is born in 1878 in Ashton then Elizabeth born in 1882 in Tildesley, possibly Hindesford St Annes for baptism, then another in 1889 in Salford, Ethel.

There is a marriage for Joseph Lockwood Shaw + Harriet Ann Jones in June quarter of 1888? in Ashton..strange
In 1891 they are all together living at Eccles New Road ,Pendleton. Joseph is 42 and a retired brewer living on his own means, Harriet is 35 born Shafton Yorkshire. They also have a servant living with them, Fanny Elkins 19 born in India, British citizen.

I don't understand what is going on here, maybe I have it all wrong
After this the trail goes cold and I got too tired to look further. Ill try again tomorrow.

Hi RATTY. First off, a big thank you for going to so much effort. As you quite rightly realised I have most of this information already. It seems you've hit the same barriers that I did!

You'll find William living at the Brewery Yard, Bedford, Leigh, in 1871. He is listed as a brewer, aged 49 (of Staly Bridge!!) and living with Elizabeth Lockwood (unmarried sister-in-law) she being described as House Keeper.

William was buried in 1889 at Grave No. B3(ASH)309-310, Dukinfield Cemetery, Hall Green Road, Dukinfield, SK16 4EP (Opened 1866).

Some confusion with the Shaw family relates to their tendency to change name! Two generations of Henry Shaw became Harry and Percy became Peter!

I certainly don't think you have it all wrong..rather the contrary.

What I have found since last posting is that some of the Shaws of St. Helens moved to the USA. It may explain where some of their forebears disappeared to!

Thanks again for the sterling job. One day with the help of folks like yourself, the full truth will be discovered. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence it helps and yes keep chipping away and eventually you will get there, more and more info comes online all the time also, saves the leg work. Many hands make light work as they say. Ive had a few fiddly names of my own one who kept chaging between Ann and Nancy that speings to mind, took ages before I clicked.

Not found the burials of your Joseph or Annie having searched through all my parish records collection, I dont have many catholic records though and this may be the secret of their missing vital records possibly?

anyway for now have a look at these for George the Mayor of Leigh and his brewing company..

Two random vitals here that may fit into your story

I passed by that today on the way to pick daughter up from friends)~~~~ Is this Joseph Lockwood Shaws second daughter and not Ethel (1889) as you stated in your first post or am I wrong?

Well spotted, I missed that one, (margaret Lockwood you meant though) his son who died young is in the house next door but one I see. They must have confused Staley Bridge translating instead to H. Bridge in the census records.

They do have many interests as a business so I bet this is where the boys disappear to maybe, at least two of them in 1891 go missing, confusion with the census filling in?

Much of this is new to me, thanks.

Just a correction re George. He died on 22 June 1918. William and Frank (sons) were by this time already directors of the George Shaw and Co., Ltd., Leigh Brewery. Elder son, William, became MD shortly after George's death. If anyone wants to photograph George's grave, the Shaw family memorial can be found at Leigh Cemetery - 5.B.4.

I'll go away and chew over the new stuff.

Again, many thanks.

Apologies again, George retired to Southport and died there in 1918, it was late and I was rushing, good job you know what I mean.

I think Ive found a problem

There is a family Joseph Shaw and Harriet Ann nee Jones married April 1888 Christchurch Asht under Lyne Tameside Cheshire reg(CE1/5/391)

In 1891 and 1901 they reside at Anglesea Street Waterloo Lancs Ashton U Lyne

Joseph is a coal miner born 1867 in Ahton under Lyne Harriet Ann born in Durham 1871

they have a father of Joseph living with them named John William born Derbyshire 1834

Their children are Edith Ada, Edwin and John William

I have been looking for Jos Lockwood and Harriet and even their children after 1891 and came across this, there is a tree on Ancestry for them also

No sign of you lot yet though ? Maybe this is who Joseph and Annie are visiting in Canada?

see here (I have the images if you want them.)

On Ancestry, passenger list to Quebec Montreal from Liverpool 25th May 1940 for a Joseph and Annie Shaw of 201 Nutgrove Road Thatto Heath, St Helens. He is a porter age 62 Ship was Duchess of Bedford. The ages are a great match considering that she is 2 years older than him I think this is them but they are only visiting, maybe family are there..
another one, incoming this time 27th August 1939 from Canada to Liverpool, same ship
Joseph and Annie Shaw Retired going to Nutgrove Dairy Thatto Heath St Helens (ages 61 and 59 this time) Country of last residence USA
So they lived there but came home again. For how long. I dont have time to search all the records of that set sorry and of course this may not be them

Here is a link for the Bap of Edith Jagger

And this appears to be Nutgrove Dairy, now modernised and converted

A bit more today

Canada resources
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/search/Pages/ancestors-search.aspx

There is a tree on Ancestry that has them emigrating to Canada but its a bit mixed up with errors in the records so I couldt trust it until I had sight of evidence

Found a birth registration for Joseph/ Annies son William Lockwood Shaw in March quarter 1907, the ref is SH/287/13 for the local registrar if you want it.

Nothing much left of Corporation street as it was then when Joseph and Annie had their shop , a mix of shops hotels and residential then but it looks like the shop was at the Shaw Street end of the street, now its a hospital walk in centre and its car park and ex theatre / bingo hall. Interestingly there seems to be a lot of businesses run by "foreigners" to St Helens there in 1911

Don't think there is much more to find here in St Helens though

May or may not be of relevance here, I grew up with an Ian shaw who lived in Sutton, Junction Lane to be precise. That was the early 60's to the late 70's. His dad was Eric Shaw and he had his own small coach firm. I know Ians parents originated from Ashton Under Lyne. They moved away from Junction Lane about the end of the 80's. Ian had 2 older borthers, don't recall their names, and there was also a Grandmother at the house as well but no idea which side of the family. Anyway, when I knew the family dad would have been early 40's.

@ Ratty - Thanks again for your efforts, Ratty, and apologies for my late response.

I'm sure I've got the right Joseph Shaw in 1891, living with Harriet in Salford, and described as a retired brewer.

Although it would be great to learn more about his family, I'd be delighted just to find his death details, but I suspect I never will.

@ jimmy_A - There is an Eric Shaw in whom I'm interested. He was probably born in Ashton-u-Lyne or Dukinfield around 1890, travelled to Leigh in 1904, 1912, and 1920 for family events and was on active service as a lieutenant in 1918. He was described as being nephew to George Shaw referred to earlier in this thread. The Eric you referred to is too young to be 'my' Eric. But, thanks a mucho for posting.

Dear All

I am a descendent of Joseph Lockwood Shaw. I have not located a death certificate for him but he had died before his daughter Elizabeth married Albert Hargreaves on 30th May 1903 (my great grandparents).

You are right that Joseph (b 1878) did emigrate to Canada (I have seen family correspondence + photos from Canada). I am not certain where he was around 1901 (St Helen's is a new possibility). However I have/had been working on the assumption that Elizabeth (age 19) was living in Ashton Under Lyne in 1901 (single living off her own means) with a George Shaw (single, age 22) and that George is one of the Shaw clan or "George" could even be an incorrect name for Joseph (1901 census return for ). I would very much appreciate any further details with regards them being at the Moat House in 1900.

I am also really struggling to trace Harriett! However I am pretty certain that her marriage was not the Shaw/Jones marriage in Ashton in 1888. I am working on the assumption that her maiden name was "Jagger" (middle name of second daughter). I have so far found a 1861 census return for a Harriott Jager (age 5 born Shafton) in South Hiendley. Yorks ( near Shafton) and then a 1871 census return for Harriet Jaggary (age 15, house servant born Shafton) in Worsley (i.e. in the vicinity of the Shaw interests in Leigh) which may be our lady. But nothing then until the 1891 census and her subsequent death.

I would be happy to share my research!
