Upton or Hupton - Sutton area

Hi all

I am looking for Upton or Hupton or anything which looks like Hupton (it is spelt differently). They were in the Sutton area, Worsley Brow 1841. Henry Upton died 1853, Prescott. I can't find him in the area in 1851 though. Obviously he could have moved and then come back. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about Upton's in the ST Helens area. I am really looking for his birth about 1780s. Unfortunately I can't look on IGI my computer is refusing to let me.

Any info at all would be great. Oh by the way I think he was married to Martha.

Found a marriage after Banns for a Martha Upton daughter of Henry Upton at St Peter C.E. Parr St Helens 24 Feb 1862, she married John Sharples son of Thomas Sharples a miner, wit Thomas Sharples, Jane Leyland, both Martha & John lived in Parr and made there mark X

could this be your Henry, if so any info on the Jane Leyland?

Hello wrb

I have nothing on Jane Leyland. Martha is the daughter of my Henry and the sister of my ancestor Joseph Hupton.

Delta59 going to PM you about Joseph Upton, is this your Joseph in St Helens Cemetery section 2 Grave 51

I don't think so. Joseph was born in St Helens but seems to have moved to Staffordshire by 1851 and I have him dying there in 1907. Although I don't have a burial.

Have you had a look on Lancs OPC?

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html

You'll find an entry for Burtonwood which may be related to your Sutton family.

I have all the Uptons from LanOPC that are mine. Some of them are not. The name is a problem. It is spelt differently depending on who was writing it down. Also sometimes they have put Lupton, Hufton etc. It is only within the last 100yrs or so that I can safely say it is Hupton, which is my maiden name.

Thank you for your reply. I don't think so. Or at least not a direct ancestor. As I said mine moved from St Helens early on to Staffs. They flitted about between there and Astley/Tyldesley/Atherton in 19thc and we are all still here. It was really the early St Helens lot I am having trouble finding. I can't find a marriage for Henry b1786ish and Martha. There is one in Wigan in LancsOPC but I don't feel confident on that one. As I said at the beginning I can't get on IGI it won't let me but if memory serves me right I don't think they had anything either. Sat here scratching my head!
