Hi I am trying to trace information and connections for my mum Barbara Valerie Waine

My sister located a 1901 census entry for relatives living at 149, Chapel Street, St.Helens as follows:

Mathew C Dorning age 59 b. Liverpool (gg grandfather) born 1842

A glassblower at Pilkington's

Ann Waine (nee Dorning) (g grandmother) Born?

her siblings:-

Elizabeth A Dorning age 23 - born 1878 st helen's

William H Dorning age 19 - born 1882 st helen’s

Robert J Dorning age 15 - born 1886 st helen’s

Ann Waine had children:-

Frederick J Waine age 6

Albert Waine age 4

Frank E Waine age 2

Then later in 1902 my grandfather Sebastian Richard Dorning Waine - who worked at Pilkingtons we believe as a draftsman and worked on designs for camouflage possible for the decoy site and other things. At one point he looked at seeking working in Redruth, Cornwall - perhaps something to do with minerals relating to glass and also on the Isle of Sheppey but did not move there and stayed working for Pilkington's instead. He was a warden during WW2 and my mum and her parents moved to Stockport/Heaton Moor, Cheshire. Sebastian married Ellen Anderton, my mum Barbara is their only child.

I don't know the christian name of Mr Waine - the father of Ann's children nor what may have happened to him I am also not sure how I read the census records on this site and make sense of them as I am new to all this!

I don't know the name of Ann's mother either

It would be great to find out the occupation of the other family members and whether any more worked at Pilkingtons or what they did and who they married etc

Also photos of the address where they were located in 1901, 149, Chapel Street, St.Helens.

Also if anyone has relatives who knew any of them and may have been friends or who worked with them.

It would be great to hear any information/connections

Many Thanks in advance!!!!

I spoke to my mum last night and got a few more details about Ann Dorning's husband James Waine my mum's grandfather.

He lived with my mum and Sebastian and Ellen Dorning Waine in Heaton Moor, Cheshire .

They moved to Heaton Moor/left St Helen's in 1939, Sebastian left Pilkington's where he was a draftsman then a plant engineer to work for Renold Chains and it was for Renold Chains that he designed camouflage etc

Sebastian also had a younger sister who came along after 1902 Edna Dorning Waine there was also a Lesley Waine who was one of Seb's brothers. So far looks like Ann & James had 6 children:

From the 1901 census:

Frederick J Waine age 6

Albert Waine age 4

Frank E Waine age 2

Then 1902 - Sebastian Richard Dorning Waine

Then Edna & Lesley

Edna Dorning Waine married Wallis Hatton and lived in Prescott then Tamworth and they had two children.

Sebastian went to Collyers and was eleven years older than one of his cousins Robert Dorning the actor known as 'Robbie'.

Robert Dorning's father Robert John Dorning who worked in a local pit as a coal miner haulier married to Mary Elizabeth Dorning, formerly Howard was one of Ann's brothers.

Mum thinks that James Waine also worked at Pilkington's, mum describes James Waine at Heaton Moor as a big old grump who sat in his rocking chair wearing a fair isle jumper and used all the sweet rations :>

He must have felt he had earn it? :>

Mum said that Sebastian used to say his family originated in Lancaster and also mentioned the 'Shameless Waine's' with humour that referred to three sisters who had 17 children between them and never married.

So a bit more information to go on there! :>

Hi John, I have had a look at the genealogy research my sister has been doing on the whole family tree and we have this detail.

I am hoping there might be some ancestry that will relate to the other members of the forum looking up Dorning relations and have replied to the post about a connection between James Dorning of the alma vaults pub and a post from someone in argentina looking for info on their relatives.

I have also received some new photos of my Grandad Sebastian Richard Dorning Waine whilst employed at Pilkingtons as a draftsman then plant engineer.

Also James Waine his father and Ann Dorning.
