Claire Rigby
Hi, I have come across a photo on here of a James Dorning. It would not tell me who posted it. My 4th and 5th Great Grandfather were called James Dorning - 1796-1851 - married to Ann & 1893- 1903 married to Elizabeth, and I was wondering of there was any information about The Dorning Family (sometimes spelled Durning). Or if the James in the picture was either of these two?
Dave
I think that it might have been something to do with this topic when we were making the pubs list (Alma Vaults).

Dave
Yes, he's in the gallery - connected to the pub page. I don't remember now (Le200 might?) but the picture would have been from somebody connected to the other topic I mentioned.

You'll find some listed here - http://www.sthelens-connect.net/home/nameinterests.php Click into the drop-down box and enter D - then it will come up with a list of surnames .. take it from there. I can see five people listed - including yourself. Try contacting the others and see if they're willing to chat with you. Good Luck

Claire Rigby
Oh I do hope it's the same James Dorning as my 4th Great Grandfather (or 5th). But the person isn't accepting messages, so I hope he sees this. Just cross referenced with the 1881 Census and it's not him. There is another James Dorning. Nevermind - Back to the drawing board. ? ?

Phyll
Yes I found it interesting, I'd forgotten Robert Dorning was born in St. Helens. He started off as a Ballet Dancer and was a dancer in the wonderful film "The Red Shoes". Another connection to St. Helens was that some of the music was conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ3lqJ9lStA
dorning
Re Wikipedia - Robert Dorning was born at 108 Croppers Hill in St Helens, Lancashire, England, on 13 May 1913. His father was Robert John Dorning who worked in a local pit as a coal miner haulier and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Dorning, formerly Howard.[1] He was educated at Cowley Grammar Schoolin St Helens, where he also learnt to play violin and saxophone. After leaving school, Dorning studied drama and dance in Liverpool with the intention of becoming a ballet dancer. During the 1930s he had a brief career as a musical comedian in theatre, before choosing acting as his profession. Robert John Dorning (Robert Dorning) may be an uncle of my grandfather's - Sebastian Richard Dorning Waine born 1902 he has an uncle - Robert J Dorning age 15 in the 1901 census - I am just starting out with it but it has been mentioned there was a connection in my family! No mention of a James Dorning as yet though!
