Alan 3,213 #1352 Posted November 29, 2017 Ta Phyll, I assume that's somewhere on the road that used to go to Ravenhead from near Pilks Sheet works Head Office. If I'm remembering correctly, it ran roughly parallel to Liverpool Road

As she was smartly dressed he asked her to walk into the arcade while he took the picture, it ended up on the cover of a small magazine produced by the council. mum kept it for years, she was very proud of it and said it was the only time she'd ever been famous, well how often do people appear on the cover of a magazine? lol Sadly it was lost when she died, it was something I'd have loved to have kept. Many thanks for bringing back a happy memory for me, especially as it's coming up to the anniversary of her death. added 35 minutes later Seeing these photo's gives me a smile as I look back at how things were, there's also a touch of sadness about it too. I don't get into town as much these days and each time I do I notice that something else has gone. I took my grandchildren to Sherdley park in the summer last year, the cafe had gone and the play area had changed too, I got chatting to an older bloke who'd brought his granddaughter and I mentioned how sad it made me feel that everywhere I looked things had changed around the town. He looked at me and replied that as he was in his 70's it was worse for him as there was very little left from his youth, it made me think about it and he was right, in a way it's like someone is erasing your past. I remember Casey Brothers on Liverpool Rd, then it moved to the top of Boundary Rd, before finally settling at the old Palladium, Coxheads had a haulage yard next door, its houses now, just through the lights on the left next to the pub was Couristan Carpets, my gran was a weaver there, there was Krazy Kuts supermarket next door and a bit further along was a sort of motor shop come handymans on the opposite side Behind there when it was the old houses was the last place I can remember seeing the old gas lamps, walk along to the end by Len Beamans plumbing shop and there was a pub on the left-hand side, where the lights are now. I remember being told about an accident there once that my mother had seen, apparently a young woman got off a bus and ran out in front of it to catch another one, she didn't see the bus that was overtaking the one she'd got off and it hit her killing her instantly, I remember my mum saying there was blood running along the gutter and stray dogs were lapping it up, it's funny the things that stay with you.. Rainhill Hospital went too, my father worked there for a few years as a plumber, Triplex Glass in Eccleston, the place he served his apprenticeship, that's gone. In Sutton there was a place called Reginalds, on Reginald Rd, it used to sell all sorts, that went years ago, behind it was a small industrial estate, I served my time as an electrician at a place on there. It's funny because there was a firm on there, HL Pallets, I knew the owner because my boss would send me over to help if he had any electrical problems, everyone helped each other back then. Anyway about a year ago I got a phone call from a bloke in Widnes, he owned a pallet company, his compressor had broken down and a friend of his had given him my number. I went out there and the firm was called HL Pallets, I commented how there used to be one of the same name in Sutton and how I knew the bloke who owned it.The guy was amazed, it was the same firm, his dad had moved it to Widnes years ago, I'd helped his dad with electrics at the start of my career and now as I was approaching the end of my career, here I was helping him. So many memories, I only wish I'd taken more photo's all those years ago, but we didn't all walk around with a camera on a phone in our pockets back then did we. Guest #1371 Posted December 30, 2017 (edited) Robbob re yr yts. Did you know the history of the building. Where the flats were it used to be a bakery. When they split the boro and water eng this became our offices in 60s. Where the parking at back used to be the bakehouse. When we had our temp building on it,it still had the White tiled wall. It looked like we were in a mens toilet. Then the manse next door we bought it and also had DAVES next door. So I then had my office upstairs. It then became part of Nwwa but i left then to move to Warrington . I would imagine during the Water reorg, Gorley must have bought it cos offices moved to Goose Green. That block could tell some tales! But not even a season ticket for Wigan Rfc? would make me disclose. Harrasment etc not withstanding! Oh suchhappy memories for 8 years!
