Stevie G lived on the Bluebell Estate, Huyton as a child and went to Huyton-with-Roby CofE School in Rupert Road, Huyton. In his autobiography there's a photo of him as a child wearing his school uniform. My eldest son went to the same school, but he's a few years older than Stevie G.

For anybody who travels that route into Liverpool, the Bluebell Estate is directly behind the TA Barracks on the left-hand side of Liverpool Road (between what used to be the Bluebell pub and the Oak Tree.

Sorry to hear about your brother, rd - that was w-a-y too young to go like that.

I don't think I know your friend Sandra Fingerstone - never lived on that particular estate - though I've been in Huyton nearly 40yrs. I did a 'fair amount' of man-hunting around the old Silver Blades rink as well  .

The Bluebell was closed down and then demolished quite a few years ago now - there's only the Oak Tree left in this area now. Big new Health Centre been built where the Bluebell used to be - looks like Noah's Ark from outside :roflmao: .

My brother and I used to dj every monday and friday at the club,

I used to go there in the early 1980's on Monday nights but packed in cos you had to be signed in as a guest. There was always a load of fellers hanging around outside the door asking members to sign them in.

Whiston Central is gone, became Rainhill High School then moved to Rainhill, next door to Loyola Hall, it is now a housing estate. Holt Transport is closed, company dissolved and that also is a housing estate called Quiston Grange I think. Can't remember when they shut but they were over 85 years old at last input  of accounts in 1996.

Don't know a thing about the ghost story Hands of Halsnead this is the only time I ever heard it mentioned. Probably some children's story about St Nicks churchyard to keep them out of mischief.

I have only just discovered this site and love the memories. believe it or not after traveling here there and everywhere I am back on the same Avenue in Whiston where I was born. I went to Halsnead in  1945- 53 and the headmaster at the time was Tom Valentine. Just to let you know the Horseshoe is now a Mini Tesco!! I walked  to school every day over the iron bridge, it is still there but the sides have been heightened. I will try and take some pictures some time. The Mucky Mountains have been flattened so no kids can experience the  original fun of riding up and over them on their bikes, I recon we were the original Mountain bikers. I have a couple of photos of school classes taken 1949, I will fish them out sometime and post them. Such happy memories

I just came across the story of The Hands Of Halsnead.

A young man in the sixteen seventeen hundreds got caught stealing, up before the judge, found guilty his sentence was to have his hands chopped off, This was done and he died and his ghost as a pair of hands, haunt Halsnead park. Halsnead Park was a walled estate owned by the Willis family, hence Whiston Willis school that was built on the land

I used to live on Halsnead Park caravan site when I was first married in 1968. I heard the tale about the hands from some of the residents though I never saw anything spooky; it was a lovely place to live back then. The wall mentioned above by Ratty ran along the back of our caravan and was about 15/18 feet high.  (I often wondered why it was there in that setting - now I know) :) There was a small lake on the site too with all kinds of wildlife. It was all still there last time I looked a few years ago, I was having a fit of nostalgia one day and drove to take a look

added 3 minutes later

Just remembered it was while living there I watched the moon landing on a tiny portable B&W tv attached to a generator. No electric in the van!
