Good Luck. :thumb:

Hi phill it's 2100 monday 20/9/10, I just did as you suggested I googled Whiston to use another word I was fabasted new m62 at our back door, new viiage hotel, new eatery called red china or something big lake small lake, found our local church ST Nick's field next door is now housing estate, hill family have all gone where we used to play WERE SIR EDMUND HILLARY, been away that long rd's look differentto what i'm used to over here

Talking of Central school.I had loads of mates who went there from 1962 -1970 .One lad came home having had the stick off a Mr Billington,or was it Noble.Which left him unable to eat his tea.Anyway the lads old man Battered them both ,as they were both in the TA with him in Warrington.

My uncle John also put a Mr Wilkinson in Whiston, for hitting our Kenny with a Tee square.

Had many a happy hour researching in the old air raid shelters by the side of Two Butt Lane.

Edmund Arrowsmith Lad me.

Claim to fame.We had more convicted armed robbers than any other school in Lancashire.

NO!!!!!,? i didn't know that haha and I bet butter did't melt in your mouth either haha, you just remind me of something this happened to my mam twice, Remember the Careers days? well mum & dad were talking to our teacher Bill Shankland, and he was saying that I wasn't a boy that liked schooling, but he could see me doing Manual work that is the work I can see him doing & enjoying, mum & dad shaking their head's in agreement that would be suit him better well!! Mr(I'm the Headmaster)Noble happened by and our teacher did the intro's( I bet he wished he had't stopped by and opening his GOB) he turned around and said oh your his parent's you know you have the most useless and waste of space boys well dad said "WHAT"( you know what they say your mum & dad can say it but other people") my dad has a loud voice when he hears something he doesn't like well back went the chair with a scrape and it fell over, dad was up ready for action to take this little man out, but mum was up just as quick like a shot John, John( dad's name is Felix but hates it) don't hit him he's not worth it, Dad but he's our son I don't take that from anyone, so old noble was watching dad's fists, mam said I won't let you hit him smiles spin' around Whack smack across the GOB ( I actually felt sorry for him just at that moment) he said that's an assault I have witnesses? did you see & hear that? sorry I never ever heard people suddenly had something in their eye hahha, Well if mum & dad thought that was the end of it ha, Dad & mum & me went up to the village next day and has we were walking people pointing Mum & dad thought they were saying poor Mr Noble we went to Alfies for a haircut look's when we came to the door then Alfie said well done John & Josie people have wanted to do that just show's you Mum & Dad thinking one thing when it's the opsite

The Labour Club is still standing, don't know how as it is full of scousers!!! I went to school with Alfie Bird's nephew Dennis Bird. The term wooly back comes from when Lancashire lads ( 1 for you Docker)worked on the docks and wore a sheeps fleece on their backs to protect themselves, other dockers tended to wear leather protectors, a bit like coal-men. dry.gif

oooo that's a different story from the one that I was told.

The one that I heard is:

There was a tollbridge that needed to be crossed going from Lancashire to Liverpool (in the Huyton area). If you drove horse and cart load of sheep's fleeces across, you had to pay the toll. If it was only a small load, and you could carry it across on your back, you didn't have to pay the toll. Some Lancashire folk would unload the fleeces, carry them across on their backs, then go back for the horse and cart - which was now empty - re-load and continue on their way to the docks.

The Cronton Colliery to Huyton Quarry train line - I'm pretty certain that the entire line has now gone.

You can walk along it since the rails have been lifted, past The Duckeries and on to a field at the side of 'Big Water' by Halsnead Caravan Park - at one time it crossed the M62 via a bridge, close to the jct of M62 and M57. If you find that junction on Google Maps, you can see the remains of the bridge and the old line of the railway.

In the early 90's the bridge was closed, leaving a 'sunken lane effect' continuing to Stadt Moers Park at the bottom of Whiston Lane.

From there the line used to go to Hall Lane, Huyton where there was a level crossing and a junction with Liverpool/Manchester Line at Huyton Quarry.

Ah Two Butt lane, yes Holt Lane transport was there,it was owned by Syd Reakes who was chairman of LFC for yrs,and well known local tw at.He also owned the quarry, which was the last operating sandstone quarry in the area,It closed in 1972.He shot himself in the foot by signing a contract with the BI,a few yrs before it shut.

The Chippy down Scotchbarn lane was the Famous ''sheilas''.It was never upstairs,my aunty Dot worked there for yrs.The other school, was Blessed Edmund Arrowsmith,my old school. This was opened in 1964,and took all the crims from the old chicken run(or to give it oits correct name ''Our Lady and St.Josephs) which backed onto the houses on Sinclair avenue.

At the bottom of Two Butt lane is(or was) ''pack horse bridge'' one of the last remaining bridges built in the 1600's to allow people to skirt round the toll gates that were in the area.

And just to show that all roads lead back to the Prescot Roll of Honour, Sid Reakes was the grandson of Joseph Gordon LAUDER MC who served in the 1/5th Bn of the South Lancashire Regiment and is remembered on my "Also Served" page here

Gypsygeoff,

Sheilas was the best chippy in Prescot. It is now renamed to summat like The Supper Bar, not a patch on Sheilas. With ref to the chicken run do you remember Alan Chew 'ard as nails but a fine darts player

We had a prescot get together in aucklnad NZ in 2003,must have had at least 20 from Prescot,Whiston and Rainhill.

Gypsy geoff, just a little more about the chippy in Scotcbarn lane, before Sheilas it was Ralphs chippy.Iwas ws brought up on em.You could at one time go upstairs and eat in in my day so i'm guessing that Docker may remember correctly.I do agree, they were the best Fish and chips around.I used to live in Sutherland road(the alps) and my mam used to send me there of a tea time for our Desies tea(my older brother). On one occasion i went and decided to poke my finger in the newspaper and nick a chip, then another and another,by the time i got home there was buggar all left.I got the hiding of my life(all head shots).Needless to say i never did it again.

My late father in law lived in the alps, his name was Welsh, but his brothers were Walsh(dont ask)Peter ,his brother went on to be mayor of Knowsley. They moved from there to Bretherton road.Have you any idea when the alps were demolished?

I seem to remember when I first went to Edmund Arrowsmith in the early 60's that the chippy had an upstairs dining room.

Do you remember Whiteheads chippy, next to Derby Square? They were the worst chips in England.

Hello again GypsyGeoff,i left Sutherland Rd when i was 20 in 1962 when i got married and i'm not certain but i think it was about 1970 ish when it was demolished.I do remember whiteheads chippy, just across the road from the No.10 bus stop and yes they where mingin chips.Do you or anyone else remember a chippy just across the road from Edwards paper shop,an old lady ran it and the chip range was coal fired, good chips but not as good as Ralphs/Sheilas by a good way.I,ve tried to remenber the name but the old memory box is slowly fading.Going off chippys does anyone remember Harry Case the barber(just near the No.10 bus stop.He had a sign on the side wall of his shop that read,

The right place to shave/show your face is inside here with Harry Case.Had my very first haircut in there and he scalped,mi mam went beserk.Idont recall anyone from Bretherton Road called Walsh/Welsh but has i've said the memory is slowly fading.Did they live in the newer houses?I worked on them when i was 15,first job.

I hate to be picky but the WORST chippy was Johnny Byats in Kemble st. You only went there when it was chucking out time in the pubs, he was the only one open, and you know what it's like when youv'e had a few :roflmao:
