Waterworth family

I knew a Waterworth family from Eccleston Hill/Portico area who ran the local farm on Prescot Road, during 1940/50s onwards. They farmed the surrounding fields and worked on others in the area. One of them was opposite my house in Scholes Lane, during the 1950s and Mrs Waterworth, a small dynamo of a woman would drive the tractor along Prescot Road and up Scholes Lane, work in the fields all day then drive the tractor back later in the day loaded up with potatoes, or other vegetables. Some of this produce would be sold from a shed at the farm, either by Maggie Waterworth herself, her son Derek, or daughter Maryon. I don't recall a Mr Waterworth..the cottage they lived in fronting Prescot Road is still there and pretty much still recognisable as the way it was during the early 50s. I don't know if this family have any connections with the one you are interested in, but I would love to know if anyone knows anything about the farming Waterworths.

Thank you Kizzy, what a fascinating story.

I don't think these Waterworths are related to me as I have never heard their names before.

However my Grandfather John Henry Waterworth(1854-1924) married three times and there are some family members that we cannot trace after WW1 so there is a possibility they are related.

I used to visit the farm in the early sixties with my Nan,

the shop was in the back of the house by then and they kept pigs in the shed.

I never knew their name but if it was the same family they still run that farm now,

although I think they sold the house, they run the farm shop from the warehouse

on Prescot Road. I still shop there and buy my christmas tree there every year.

Interesting, Ratty. I'll stop by there shortly and take a look, it would be interesting to find out what happened to the family, although I've discovered since my last post that the son, Derek Waterworth died some time ago whilst still a young man.

Speaking to my mother today, she tells me that the Birchall that is running the farm now is Marion, the daughter of Maggie Waterworth so that solves that one :)

Correction, its Miriam not Marion.

Gill - Here's one I located in St Helens cemetery. 'Fraid it's not very clear, but it certainly is a Waterworth grave.

There was a Waterworth family lived in Bleak Hill Lane (Eccleston) in the 40s/50s, on the corner with Gunning Avenue. Mr Waterworth was elderly by then, and known to be a bit deaf.. I think his wife may have been mixed race; she was darker-skinned than normal for someone living in Eccleston! They had a grown-up son and daughter who both had musical interests, he as a pianist and she as a singer. Some local people were not very appreciative of the fact that improving your performance could involve constant repetition of difficult passages, not to mention practising scales!
