PRV Posted October 20, 2006 Share Posted October 20, 2006 I would like to find out more about the Caffrey family who lived in St Helens. Is there anyone else who is interested in this family? Let us start with a blank canvas and see what information we can put on it. I would be interested in these families from Widnes and Runcorn if anyone has information about them. This is a family that lived somewhere in the Sacred Heart parish. There were nine weddings there between 1882 and 1925.. The grooms were Moran, Kilgallon,Muldoon, Collins, Riley, Purcel, Sharkey, Cullen and Rooney. Any of these families working on their family tree? suste Posted March 25, 2007 Share Posted March 25, 2007 Hi there, we have recently found Caffreys and Sharkeys as a branch off on my husbands tree. Mary Ann Sharkey - husband Thomas - was formerly Caffrey and had at least 2 Caffrey sons, 1 of them killed in the 1st war. Or are we looking at Thomas Sharkey married Mary Ann Caffrey at Sacred Heart 07/01/1896. Both of these should be on the 1901 census. PRV Posted April 16, 2007 Author Share Posted April 16, 2007 Thank you Suste. We now have connections between Caffrey/Sharkey and Bracken families. The Purcell connection has been confirmed as well. I would be interested in hearing from anyone with these names in their tree. The Kilgannon connection has now appeared in both the Caffrey and McCabe families. Love to hear from any Kilgannons. I forgot to mention Suste connection with the marriage between : Catherine Sharkey who married James Kelly 01/03/1924 at Sacred Heart I am convinced that there is a connection between the Kelly and McCabe families as well. She was my great grandmother and married Bernard Cullum at Sacred Heart church..(circa 1880) will have to check on dates over the weekend if anyone still interested..I`m a newbie and just trying to find my way round the site. Hi, I have a Edward and Mary Caffrey living at 16 Pottery Street in the 1901 Census. I could have the number wrong..could this be the same Edward and Mary? They have the same children born in the same location. I will look at the 1901 image again to see if I have the right number wriiten down. Please get in touch if you would like to know more. This family name appears in many forms. i would like to get a group together to set out what happened to all of these families to see just where and how they are related. I now think that the Gaffney name is a version of Caffrey and would like to hear from anyone who has a Gaffy, Gaffney or Gaffeny family which they are looking at. Sorry to read about your Great Grandfather Edward, Patrick Caffrey. I was just about able to get the jist of what the Chaplain wrote, did he say he only had an injured elbow, but he died of his wounds? Do you have any more info. on what happened to him and are you able to copy the paper cutting so I could read it more clearly? It looks like a lot of members have Caffery connections. I got most of my information from PRV who'd already researched this family extensively and was kind enough to share some details. Apart from the two already mentioned I found another Edward Caffery, 22, who died at Gallipoli in 1915 and two other Caffery's who lost their lives in WW2. The two Edward Caffrey's from WW1 are certainly related to Edward Cullum who died in WW2 (Mums cousin) and possibly related to a few others I found on SHRH - another Edward Caffrey and a John Caffrey from WW2. I'm checking these out and so very grateful for all this information. Thanks to Stephen, Le and all who've helped with this site. On the 1911 Census, two lodgers are in the home of my Great-Great Uncle at 10 Crossfield St, along with the 4 orphaned children (8 to 17 yrs old) of his sister. This household also included his younger brother and both of these men were in their late thirties. Sounds slightly chaotic and I 'm sure it must have been, as the children were sent off to various institutions a few months later.. Anyways, the two lodgers were middle-aged and the Census stated that Edward Caffrey was b Co Longford and wife Mary Caffrey (nee Leahy) b Co Wexford. We are in touch with the descendants of this couple, so please pm me, if interested. A quick check on Ancestry etc should give you the original Census form return Kizzy. Edward (1839 Ireland) and Mary (1839 Ireland) had a daughter Mary Caffery (1861) who married William Riley (1855), Catherine Caffery (1873 – 1948 who became Moran) and Michael Caffery (1867 – 1937) not sure of any others before the 1891 census that may have moved out. Mary Caffery and William Riley had a girl - Mary Ann - She was my GG Grandmother. Mary Ann Riley was living with her Grandparents Edward and Mary Caffery in 1891 and 1901, if I remember correctly it was Liverpool st or near there. She married a Ely/Eli Williams in 1903 and had two daughters Mary and Teresa Williams, sadly Ely died in 1909. She went into Lodgings around the corner from her Grandparents in Bold St with her daughters and worked as a Pit Brow Lass at Pilkingtons. She went onto marry my GG Grandfather - Thomas Kelly (1882) on 7th October 1912 at the Sacred Heart Church, a glass labourer and a soldier in WWI, they moved to 34 Milk St and had my Great Grandmother Ellen in 1914. Sadly Mary Ann Riley/Williams/Kelly died in 1957 and was buried with her first husband. Plot Number STHELCEM / 19 / 102 Thats how my Caffery - Riley - Kelly family connects. Denise Posted September 6, 2013 Share Posted September 6, 2013 My grandmother was Mary Ann Caffrey who married Patrick Purcell but unfortunately he died a few years after they married leaving her with three small children - my mother Mary, her brother Denis and sister Margaret (Peggy).
