Jan Molbys Left Foot
Do you fancy finding out where your surname is most prevalent? Is it a nickname, a job etc. Thanks for that - what a great site - especially the maps of 1881 - another source to look at when hitting a brick wall with my searches - cheers! SaintJeff
My surname comes up most prevalent in Wigan of all places.Great site that.
splus
Never mind Jeff. I have an ancestor from Ince. We all have our crosses to bear. My ancestor from Ince, the Baxendales were concentrated there in 1881. They are still concentrated around Preston on the 1998 map. Interesting. Even more interesting, in one branch of my family the name seems to have died out. I have hit a brick wall. Looking onthe surname profiler, there are no instances of it around this area in 1998. The majority of instances are in Central or West London. No wonder I couldn't find any,
I forget
It was too busy before, but have managed to perform searches now. Interesting how most of my husbands line are still most concentrated round Lancashire/St Helens. Our surname is still rare in the SE. (talking of which I wish 'Who do you think you are' would do Johnny Vegas as I can't help but think that we are distantly related eeeek!) I wonder why do the 'Scottish' names etc, still show up as mainly 'English' (over 90%)? Is it that so many now live in England. Anyway, hours of fun, even for my 'oh no your're not doing my family history again' husband. Cindy
Voll
Has anyone tried entering a hyphenated surname? I can't get it to work.
Dave
Most hyphenated surnames are probably too rare for inclusion.
Carr Millite
No record of my Mum's maiden name at all. No wonder I gave genealogy up as a bad job.
I forget
No record of my Mum's maiden name at all.No wonder I gave genealogy up as a bad job. Come on, you can't say that and not tell us what her maiden name was, it must be unusual (or hypenated). I forget
Ok.Try this for size Henaff and her Mum's maiden name was Eker. Ok, thats hard, but there are a handfull of Eker's on Freebmd website, no Henaff. but one Haneff. Did they live round St Helen's ? May be worth posting on 'Name Interests' with all the info you do have, then if none of the experts on this site can find anything, maybe then give up! If they lived elsewhere try General Genealogy, you never know. If you know how its pronounced try alternative spellings. The only real problem you have is if they didn't register births, marriages etc. I have that problem on my mums side cindy
Carr Millite
Mum's family was evacuated from the Channel Islands during WW2 Cindy. There are a few Ekers left in Guernsey and there used to be one in Manchester. As for Henaff, it's French and there aren't many left now. My Grandad had a brother who disappeared so I don't know whether he had children (particularly sons) or not. My Grandad had one son who has one son who has one son so the name will hopefully continue. Same situation on other side of family too. My Dad was the only one in his family (on the male side) to have a son (my brother) and he has one son so if he doesn't produce a son the name will die out. I did start to look on my Dad's side but I can't even find my Grandmother. She was born in St. Helens and died in 1978 aged 79. Whole things is harder than it looks. I forget
I suppose unless you can get a holiday on the Channel Islands I suppose doing your research is going to be very tricky! did start to look on my Dad's side but I can't even find my Grandmother. She was born in St. Helens and died in 1978 aged 79. Do you know what her maiden name was? Maybe someone can find her. Did you find her marriage certificate? cindy
Carr Millite
I can't even find that she was born Cindy, let alone married. Even with this information:- Born March 1899 Died December 1979 Name Florence Briars, fathers name Augustus. I'm crap at this.
splus
That could be a good thing. It is addictve once you get into it.
I forget
Don't worry, I have just received yet another cert that I was CONVINCED was correct, and it wasn't (grrrr) still the other 3 were OK! How much research have you done before? the BBC website has good basic info under family history. And Freebmd and the IGI sites don't have everything. but at least you can view some of the indexes on Freebmd for yourself now. I am trying to search for you, but Freebmd is running v. slow tonight. If you put requests on the name interests and Census sections I'm sure someone who is better at this than me would look up for you. It might get you going. On the 1901 census indexes from this site there is a Florence Briairs age 1, with siblings: Agnes, Joseph, Richard and Teresa. Only trouble is the adults are William and Annie. However they may not necessarily be her parents. Its worth a look..Piece 3520, Folio 123. Good luck, don't give up you're bound to get a lead on one line or another if you keep looking. Carr Millite
That's my Gran! I remember Aunts Theresa and Agnes. My Gran named two of her children Richard and Theresa too. That's amazing Cindy. Unfortunately I haven't a clue what pieces and folios are. You're a star! Thank you. Have just remembered something else, I was named after my Great Grandmother. Well almost, my Mum put her foot down at Annie. I got Anne instead.
I forget
Excellent! I'm glad I found the right ones. If you put a request under 1901 census section under family history, someone might give you a transcription of the census entry. I'm afraid I don't have access to copies of the actual pages myself. The Piece and Folio numbers are to help in finding the correct census page. Its the reference system used on census entries. If you want to get into it, I see you live in Wigan, its not too far, maybe you could call St Helens library and then go and have a look at their census records, they may also have indexes to help you find the certificates of your ancestors. But have a look at the web sites I pointed out first and remember that the people on this site are brilliant at helping with St Helens based family history. Good luck, you're not crap at it, its just learning, and as Splus says its also addictive once you get into it. Just keep it simple and start from what you know and work slowly back through time. As this is now going 'off topic' I think we should leave it at this. (sorry I am a terrible waffler) Cindy

Well almost, my Mum put her foot down at Annie. I got Anne instead. I had a look at the St. Helens Cemetery and there are a number of Briars buried there. I just scanned the page but the name Annie is there. Have you looked at their records before? I found lots of information on my Ellam side there and it got me through the brick wall I had been facing for years! Lisa Ellam

In addition, the St. Helens Marriage records show a marriage between Samuel Booth and Florenciae M. Briars on 14 Feb. 1920 at Sacred Heart RC. I also found them in the St. Helens Cemetery. Samuel Rushworth Booth was buried 5 June 1962. He was 71 years old. Florence Mary Booth was buried 16 Dec 1978. She was 79 years old. They are together in Grave section 52, Grave #71. If there is anything else I can help you with please let me know. Everyone on these boards has been so kind to me I really enjoy giving back.
