Parr and Pennington

I'm trying to track down any information on LILIAN (Lily) PARR, born April 26th 1905 at 56 or 58 Union Street, St Helens. She died in Preston on May 24th 1978 and is buried in St Helens.

Her father was GEORGE, a glass-worker, born 1875.

Her mother was SARAH, formerly PENNINGTON.

At the time of the 1901 census there were two children in the family, Lily's siblings, who may have living relatives, and it's these I'm trying to trace.

The children were JOHN PARR, born 1897, and ELIZABETH PARR born 1899. There may have been one or two others before LILIAN's birth.

Has anyone got any information on any of this family?

Hi Barbara

I think I might have found your George in 1881. Peel St was at the back of Union St at Gerard's Bridge. Nowadays it's called Peel Place. It was the nearest match regards the birth year you gave.

I think a post of mine has gone missing. I must have pressed the wrong button. What I said was that I tracked down that info, too, and had noted the Windle romance! However, by 1901, John Parr, Lily's grandad has moved to Oldfield Street with his wife, married daughter Betsy (Elizabeth) who is now Kenyon, her husband and their baby, Margaret, his widowed daughter Annie, who is now Ann Price with an 8 month old daughter Mabel, and his two other daughters, 18 year old Jane, and 2 year old Alice. They also have a lodger, a glass-worker, Roberty Finney. And as I said, he is classed as 'feeble minded'.

Bit of a coincidence, but this weekend I found out from Ancestry that my maternal GGDad (John Taberner b.1852) married Mary Ann Pennington (widow)on Oct 21 1877. Strange thing is John's father is given as William Parr and Mary Ann's father as Thomas French. Anyone shed light on this?

Is this the one you mean Plonker?

Marriage: 21 Oct 1877 St Peter, Parr, Lancashire, England

John Taberner - above age, Miner, Bachelor, Parr

Mary Ann Pennington - (X), above age, Widow, Parr

Groom's Father: William Parr, Labourer

Bride's Father: Thomas French, Shoemaker

Witness: John Henry Foster, (X); Thomas Greenall

Married by Banns by: A. A. Nunn

Well her maiden name would probably have been French before she became Pennington.

I wonder if this was her deceased husband?

Burial: 27 Feb 1876 St Peter, Parr, Lancashire, England

In the 1881 Census John and Mary Ann Taberner live at 183 Chancery Lane, Parr and there is a

William Parr (? Stepfather) also in Chancery Lane, as well as lots of other families named Parr,

also in Chancery Lane, possibly all related?

I wonder if this was John Taberner's Father?

Yes Phyll, that's the marriage. I came to the same conclusion as you re Mary Ann's birth name but couldn't find her or her father in previous censuses. As you say, there were a lot of Parrs in the proximity of 183 Chancery lane including a William Parr at 191 - labourer and beer house keeper but can't get a connection.
