I used to queue up with Mum for pies for Granddad but wasn't a fan myself. I think it was the idea of eating the flesh of a pig! Not the religious sort, just a cute baby piglet :)

I was reading about the closure of Burchalls on a Facebook thread, and somebody piped up that they were from down south and that people down there never eat hot pork pies, and that a notion of eating hot pork pies seemed so alien. I was tempted to ask if they knew that the cold pork pies that they were so familiar with were once actually cooked. It's pretty obvious really, isn't it? I didn't bother though.

It comes down to footfall. People are not going into the town centre for a lot of different reasons. Consequently town centre shops close. Burchalls included. If it was viable as a business then someone would take it over.

Maybe Burchalls did not employ as many staff as Greenalls or Beechams but it is such an iconic institution to the majority of St Heleners. Whenever I travelled back from SA, some 6,000 miles, I always made time to have a taste of nostalgia. Is no-one taking over Mr Burchall's "secret recipe" to stop me having withdrawal symptoms whenever I return?

Nobody has taken the business. He even offered it at an almost giveaway price to the staff who work there but they didn't want it.

Hi DOT, what a great shame. Is it because St Helens town centre, especially Westfield St, is becoming a "no go area"? On the rare occasions I visited there it felt very depressed.

I wrote a long answer to Brianza but it hasn't appeared. I think I might not have passed the verifying as a human test.

I did the same thing the other day. Quite annoying. It was probably due to the time between starting and then posting. It shouldn't be necessary, but keep in mind that it might happen: select all and copy before submitting.

I would like to have the exact *inside the pie* filling ingredients, not the pastry, just the pork mixture details.
are there any pie shops or is there a pie shop (similar to what Pimmys have for their pies) that has a copy of the Burchalls pie? Is it really a secret recipe like the corrie hotpot?

Maybe she deleted it for being in a pie thread...
Anyway what is this place a parallel universe? Who is Brianza? Is it a made up name?
Is it a form of he'll where only donks and Alan post about what they want regardless of the title?

No such thing as a parallel universe by definition of the word universe.
