it is so quiet in terms of real member activity that I'm tempted to make it into a part-time website.
I'm brimming with stuff to post but seem to get ignored generally which I'm used to but every post I make seems to kill the thread, as it did previously.
But connect meant a lot anyway, I only found our it had started again through a link on the connect Facebook page.
Probably same for most old members, they won't know about it

You're doing OK. It has been very quiet lately. We had a lot of trouble with those bots and having to use Cloudflare, which slowed everything down. Some haven't been coming on lately due to real-life problems. Maybe it'll pick up again; I don't know.

Is there anyway we get to the latest post in a topic without having to scroll down and down?

Yes. When you are on an index page that is listing the topics, click the little speech bubble icon next to the last poster's name, and that should take you to the latest post.

Is it common to be sent to login again just when you hit post for a message and come back to find its gone?

If the session has timed out, then that can happen. Sometimes if you hit the browser back button a few times after logging in again, you can rescue a post, but it is very hit and miss.
