Ashton in Makerfield.

Post by HORT »

Ashton in Makerfield is what we always called it and so did everywhere I know of. So why is it now suddenly called just Makerfield?

Didn't there used to be a trolley-bus service from St Helens (by the old open market hall) to Atherton which I assume was in Makerfield?

Now I remember. The trolley-bus service to Atherton was number 1. The Dentons Green to St Helens Junction service was number 6

Once upon a time there didn't use to be a 'St Helens'. Area names can occasionally change. But we all knew that Ashton was called "Ashton in Makerfield'. It isn't a new thing. There were times when Newton-le-Willows was called "Newton in Makerfield". See, that was its historic name.

Or shall we be further witness to your boiling rage?

Ashton was subsumed (yes, subsumed!) into the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan and Newton was similarly subsumed into the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, and the destruction of their former Makerfield identity was completed.
