Re: Ashton in Makerfield.

Despite the near-Wigan accent, Yick was always part of St Helens when I lived in St Helens in the early 1960s. It was a sort of extreme Parr

Now I remember. The trolley-bus service to Atherton was number 1. The Dentons Green to St Helens Junction service was number 6

Re: Ashton in Makerfield.

Didn't there used to be a trolley-bus service from St Helens (by the old open market hall) to Atherton which I assume was in Makerfield?

I'm an avid reader but I'd never heard of that. Most of my reading at the moment is current unbiased political stuff like Rory Stewarts memories from when he represented local Cumbrians (Penrith and the Borders) or when he was mooching across parts of Asia

Re: Men and women's RL Challenge Cup Finals at Wembley

I enjoyed going to Wembley too, we usually made a long weekend of it taking in West-End shows etc but times have changed and there isn't the money around for supporters these days, as evidenced by all the empty seats.

Re: Men and women's RL Challenge Cup Finals at Wembley

It's one for the RFL and clubs themselves to answer. Probably initially by taking a poll of clubs and their life membership supporters. Speaking personally, I believe that due to costs and travel issues, Wembley in particular and London in general lost their appeal many moons ago

Men and women's RL Challenge Cup Finals at Wembley

Does the RFL, the game's ruling body need to rethink these events? I never missed attending a Wembley Final between 1986 when I was involved with the professional game until Wembley was being redeveloped in the late 1990sand cannot recall the stadium looking as bare as it did today. Neither can I ...

Late Spring Bank Holidays in the early 1950s

Or Whit Monday as it was called then:

From a very early age I’d attended Sunday School at St Andrew’s Mission Church in Dentons Green Lane. I suppose the best way of describing its status is that it, along with St Mary’s in Keswick Road and York Street Mission, were all sub-branches of St Helens ...

More daft memories

A humn on the radio the other day brought back a memory from my child hood. The hymn was "Bread from Heaven". The daft words I remembered were:

Bread from Nevins's
Tea from Liptons's
Beer from the Colliers arms, Colliers Arms
Beer from the Colliers Arms

What a total bore. It goes on for ever and most of the time it's just players deciding on their best shot. Thank goodness for this sunny weather so I can get on with gardening and I'm not stuck indoors
