I attended until 1966. It was a pretty good school. I liked Miss Burchall very much. She was an elderly lady and took us for English Literature. I came first every year in this subject and the one year that I came second she was furious. I wish she'd taken me under her wing or that I'd had the gumption to talk to her about Literature since she nurtured a lifelong interest in the subject. RIP Miss Burchall. Was here in the juniors from 1967-71. I was taught by Mrs. Roebuck, Mr. Broadbere, Mrs. Cook, Mr. Swift. Mrs Cook was my favourite. Head was Mr. Smeltzer, a truly inspiring man who even made assembly interesting! Windlehurst :

I started here at age 4, in 1965. Infants were all in one room, in three rows according to age. Teacher was Mrs. Johnson. She was a wonderful teacher, strict but very kind and fair. She stood no nonsense! Dinners were awful, eaten in the "dinner hut" on Club St., and a couple of times I ran away and was chased up Moss Bank Rd. by the dinner lady. I think I probably got a smack on the legs from my mum for that! Juniors were all taught by the headmaster I think, but I left after the infants because that year only 1 pupil passed the 11+ and my parents thought I'd do better at Windlehurst. However, I think I owe a great debt of gratitude to Mrs. Johnson for such a good start to my education Moss Bank :

The original colour of uniform was brown with a gold diagonal stripe girls also had to wear berets. The color then changed to blue with a gold diagonal stripe, if my memory serves me it changed because of the school becoming comprehensive, I also think that only the final year students could wear black. (I stand corrected if I'm wrong). The Head at this time was Mr Garner, Miss White and Mrs Cameron were English Teachers, Miss Cole - Science, Mrs Hale - Maths, Mrs Fox - Geography, Mr Yates - History, Mrs Hickman - Music Rivington :

I was there around 52 - 58 I guess. Wright was the head and there was a Billy Belinki or some such spelling that we all gave hell to . Jock Stroach or some similar name was on one side of him around the quad and PAM Morley [ come here boy ] was on the other side Poor Billy was a jew if I rember correctly and traveled so the story went from the Manchester area each day but that memory could have been faded by time. Hated the school it did nothing for me I just got bullied and the teachers were blind to it .
I once stopped to talk to a friend who was outside a class with some of his classmates until the classroom door opened and out stepped a teacher " in here you lot " he said ,I went to walk away but the teacher told me to get in the class with the others I tried to explain but he was having none of it
"in here "he repeated.
Well I don't know what they had done but they all got the cane infront of a full class including me .
I was made up when it was pulled down

I remeber Mrs Wolfs husband used to tell us atsory at end of term. I never had a nap would not sleep and was allowed to play quietly in sand pit in corner, also did not like milk as was left by radiator and hated outside loo's in winter, always whitewashed each year. York Street :
