A number of people have mentioned Gornall's shop on the corner of Seddon St and Hard Lane, but does anyone remember the Co-op on the corner of City Gardens and Hard Lane. It even had a butchers shop, which is surprising because there was another butchers in Rivington Avenue between City Gardens and City Rd.

However, I would like to know the name of another shop in Hard Lane, but I can't remember what it was called. It was in 1950s and early 1960s and was at 216 Hard Lane. Three doors up from City Rd and facing Ashalls.

I think it may have been a wool shop or a child's clothing shop. Can anyone remember what it was called? I think a family called Appleton lived nex door.

Can't remember that one but, if it was a Wool Shop, my mum will definitely remember it. I'll ask her tomorrow.

These days it seems that everybody is much younger than me.

Rather strange, as I'm still trying to decide what I want to be 'when I grow up' - even though I'm due to retire next year .

Now Ollie your still a young chick, I sometimes think that Im from a different era when all of a sudden a post comes up and Im back

on track, like your post of Hard ln, I wonder if you remember the paper shop at the top? It was run by my uncle for quite a few years

his name was Whalley, he moved there from a shop in Liverpool rd when that area was being modenised mid 1950s I think.

Hello jinx - yes I do remember the newsagents - that's where we got our sweets and comics from. I remember Liverpool Road (and the streets between there and Westfield Street) before it was demolished.

There was also a Grocers (Gabbott's), a chippy (Briers) and a Greengrocers (can't remember their name though).

My mum, dad and sisters moved in around 1956 when it first was built - they were the first tenants of their house. I lived with grandparents for another few years and then went to live there properly in 1965.

My Auntie Phyllis used to work there for years, wonder if anyone remembers her? RIP.

Phyll, I don't think there was ever a Post Office in City Road. There was a Post Office on the corner of Rivington Avenue and Seddon Street.

You may have thought this was in City Road because the junction of Seddon St and Rivvy Ave is only about 2 yards from the junction of Rivvy Ave with City Road.

I lived in Rivington Ave from 1957 to 1972 and used to go in the Post Office on a regular basis but I can't remember the names of anyone who worked there.

Hort, Yes, you're right. I got a bit lost there. I remember now, it was called
Friar Street Post Office/Tunstalls. Thanks for reminding me where it was.
