Yes the Suspended carriage had problems occasionally resulting in massive queues and long delays. It did'nt operate in high winds which meant a long detour via Warrinton Bridge Foot.
The last crossing of the day was always a gamble whether there would be room to get your vehicle on or not, it was very frustrating if you were among the missers and had to double back via the Warrington route.
Pedestrians and Cyclists did have an alternative, they could cross the River via the footpath at the side of the Railway bridge for a small paymant,
In 1951 I worked at Tamworth for a spell and came home at weekends on the train to Liverpool. If I got off the train at Runcorn and walked over the railway bridge path my Father could pick me up in his old van and I could be home a lot quicker than going into Lime Street and catching a train to St Helens and then a Bus home.

Hi Phyll.
No I didnt pay I got it off the Pathe site you only have to pay for the full version. There are some great links on the site to other historic things such as the Anderton lift at Northwich

Here is a link to the Pathe site I dont think there are any copyright issues .type in some key words such as Runcorn bridge in the search and it will find the link.

Skyman. A lot of people who want to get to St Helens take the wrong exit off the Widnes Bridge and end up in the Industrial estate ,Widnes town.or the road to Speke Airport..
You must be in the inside lane when coming from Runcorn and keep a sharp lookout about 3/4way over the bridge for the St Helens sign slip road and then keep to the right so as not to take the Widnes town centre road you will then be on the Bypass to Rainhill Stoops Island.

I'm sorry, les (and Joan) - I didn't even mean that Skemlmersdale was a bad place to live Posted Image - I meant that the road network is bad.

For anybody who doesn't know the roads well, it's just a nightmare of a town to find your way back out again ........................

ps - I'm sure that you have both brought more than a bit of class to that particular corner of Lancashire :bigwink:.

I know it wasn't an attack, you're too much of a lady for that. Yes the road lay-out is to say the least challenging!! Every new town seems to be the same. The layout of Telford is so bad that several of the original builders are still missing :)

If you want a challenge in navigation try Runcorn.
