I have come across several people in the 1911 Census of Prescot who state that they are employed at the Electric Globe Works. Does anybody know if this was part of the BI or was it a separate company, and if the latter, then where was it located?

Cheers

I think it could well be part of the then BICC,in those days they called the bulb a globe. My late Mum worked at the BICC in Parr from 1961 until 1968 and then was transfered to Prescot were she worked until 1981.They sold lightbulbs at very cheap prices in packs of twelve to their staff.

Yes, I remember they sold all sorts of stuff at the central stores at very low prices.

But I worked there for 13 years and was never aware of anywhere on site that made bulbs. I was just wondering whether it had been part of the company at one time but then disappeared

Cheers John, that's a good find.

I was interested to find out that it isn't part of the BI cos I am analysing the 1911 census to see how many people worked there (Prescot people, that is). I can now exclude the Globe people Posted Image

I can remember being sent to the local shop (mid 50's/early 60's) to get a 'new electric light globe' (as my nan called them :)).

I'm beginning to think that there may have been something in Prescot, perhaps as well as the Huyton Quarry factory. There seems to be an awful lot of young women doing various jobs at the factory - I've now identified 20.

John

Thanks for that - I'm still analysing the Houghton/Kemble/Beaconsfield Street area, so haven't come across Moss Street yet.

There were about 8,400 people in Prescot in 1911 and I have completed about a third of them, so lots more interesting stories to come.

I've created a summary document that you might find interesting - I'll email it over to you
