Can anyone tell me the location of the Tallow Yard at Pilkingtons as i have been told this was the location of the works fire station
prior to the one at the top of Canal Street.

You will have to find someone over 80 years old to answer this one, as I lived in Canal Street from 1932 and remember the fire brigade and the men hanging on to the sides as they shot out of the fire station about 50 yards from the Phoenix Hotel.

Sounds like a scene from Where's That Fire.
Perhaps you should Google Pilkington Brothers Fire station Firemansam, you might get your information from there.

It was where Chapel house motors is now, they had an open fire engine, like the one on Camberwick green,,,lol,My mum used to take me down when I was a little kid, this was early 60s,I loved that engine,Low and behold,a few years ago we visited Botany bay outlet near Chorley on the M61,and its on display with other vintage motors, its all restored in its Pilkington Bros livery.

The info i got was from the fire brigade historian for Merseyside fire brigade he has been unable to find this location. Will ask him what date he has. As for the old Pilks fire engine at Botany Bay Chorley it was at Rainhill hospital for many years as the hospital fire engine, it was later sold and was at Botany bay and was very neglected. happy to say it is now part of the Mereseyside fire service museum and has had a lot of work done to it. it is now one of the maine exibits at the new museum at BHQ Bridle road Bootle, hope to visit shortly and take some pictures and put them on this site.

Hi I am not an 80 yr old but can remember the Pilks fire station and what some call the tallow yard.I did make a contribution via St Helens Star as this enquiry brought out quite a few responses. My report found its way into the Star as did many others about this little bit of Pilks.
Basically I can understand confusion. If you picture the scene without the current roundabout at bottom of Bridge st,as someone said it was where Chapel house motors was.I believed it was there also but some came up with it being across the road on the left. But whats a couple of feet?I used to pass it with my grandad on his bike as we went to the timber yard past the pub-was it the Washington--another possible query, for his firewood-no doubt this will cause another reminder to some.Where you come to the end of Bridge st and look right across Chalon way the tallow yard-Canal St. was on that area.A contributor also asked where was the glass shop.It was next to it and I went in there to buy CHANCE GLASS-oops yet another old memory. This little area must have some fond memories of old pilks workers as they trudged into work to await the siren?to finish.

It was next to the garages/workshops,my memories of this are from the early 60s up to its demolition probably late 70s,but judging from previous posts the tallow yard must have been elsewhere in sheetworks.

the Pilks fire engine is a picture i put on a web site. the ones of St.Helens CB Fire Service are on my brothers web site.
The first fire station was by the lodge then the Tallow Yard from 1906 and was used for six years till the Canal St Station was opened.
Has any body got any info or pictures of the Ford A series fire engines Pilks had around 1975/6

Oh sorry Sam, didn't know they were your pics, you probably know more than anyone about Fire Engines.

Found this, if it is any use to you. Sorry if you already have it.
