Fried fish was sold by the Costermongers on the Thames,as early as the 1750's maybe earlier.
Get your fried fish
threehappence a bit
you can have it on a plate or dish
or on a bit o paper.

Don't know about that Geoff but Longton Lane Chippy was good when the two sisters ran it, Eileen was one can't remember the other ones name, and the Village Chippy, when it was next to the Vic, Sue Ball's grandma had it then, Lievesley's were a bit mingy with their portions, and miserable with it.Posted Image

I believe, that the fishermen coming in off the smack vessels in Hoylake, cheshire, would give tit bits of fish to the poor families, they would coat them in flour and fry them??? to make it more than it was for the kids??Posted Image

I think that St Helens is probably the only place where you can get a 'split'! ... like in the Lancashire Hotpots song ... 'Chippy tea' .. 'in St Helens they serve splits...' etc ... I remember when I was at college in Leeds in the '70's my sister came to visit and asked for a 'split' at the local chippy .. they didn't have a clue what she was talking about!!
