As you know in April 2010 the cost of BMD's from the General Register Office rose by 32% from £7 to £9.25 with not much warning or discussion and no time for anyone to mount any opposition to the increase.

Well when the accounts for the 2010/11 year were published, the GRO's income from certificate sales hadn't increased to reflect the 32% increase in prices - it had actually fallen by 6.1%, even though tens of thousands of certificates were ordered just before the end of the year to beat the price increase and were not despatched until the new financial year. The revenue from those last minute sales is recorded in the 2010/11 accounts - without it the figures would have looked even worse.

Actual sales were just £15.894 million instead of the predicted £18.846 million, 16% lower than forecast..
In 2009/10 before the price hike the GRO made profits of over £2 million and in 2010/11 they lost £0.5 million

The latest shocking (not) news from the GRO is that Southport office is making 27 staff redundant as a result of these falling orders. Maybe they should have listened to the people who matter, their customers, who forecast this outcome.

Lets hope they dont turn this into even more of a fiasco and put prices up even more in reaction to the low sales making matters worse for everyone.
