Stopped off at Ray's the other day as sometimes only a pie will do (must be a bloke thing). That started me thinking of bakers and confectioners in Prescot when I was growing up: Ray's - Peg-leg Williams- Clook's- Cubbons- Lyons - Cousin's- Fyldes and Berry. Whittle's also sold their own pork pies. Fylde's & Berry sold the tastiest Meat & Spud Pie. Peg-Leg Williams would sell his own gravy if you took your own jug. Anyone remember other bakers and what about Rainhill & Whiston??

Les,

I think Seddons had a bakery as well - it was situated where the garage is now in St Helens Road opposite Grovenor Road

Good shout, John. I also forgot about the Co-op bakery, next to the Welsh Chapel in Cook Street.

I don't get back to Prescot very often these days but when I do I try to time it so I can get to Rays - their beef pies are my favourite.

I of course remember Fyldes and Berry - the Berry was my Auntie Nell (Ellen)
I had a Saturday and school holiday job there - the pies were good but my favourite was the staff lunch
- once all the baking was finished a tray of bacon would go into the ovens and we would have bacon butties with still warm bread!

Lyons on Kemble Street was my favourite, and I was still going there for my lunch in the mid 1980's.

Now it's Ray's, complete with a shameless link to my Roll of Honour entry for Herbert Ray, whose daughter founded the business in 1924

I do, morgan - just along the road leading to the fairground. Great little bakery!

Was there a bakery/pie shop called Lievesley's - that name seems to stick out in my mind for some reason.
