Don't know much about it, but believe the soldiers are Canadian.

What a horrible sight - beautiful animals just left lying there like that.

Suppose the soldiers knew they were facing defeat and didn't want the encroaching army to be able to use those carts. Killing the horses was probably the equivalent of shotting the tyres/petrol tank of a jeep in WWII!

I knew I'd seen this before !!

The damage was caused by Australian armoured cars.

The village in the picture is Framerville-Rainecourt, and the destruction pictured was caused on 11th August 1918 when 17th Australian Armoured Car Battalion under Lt Herd surprised the Germans.

The road is the d329, facing south west, and in the background can be seen two pagoda style buildings, which form part of the communal cemetery.

The picture below shows the same spot today,
