When I was working we used to get tickets for radio shows in manchester. They were recorded on a friday night in HULME manchester and went out on tuesday night.
The shows were fun cos you got the oops as well.LENA ZAVARONI,HINGE AND BRACKET,GRUMBLEWEEDS,GEORGIE FAME,BOB MONKHOUSE,LES DAWSON,
Then the bigwigs at BBC transferred the shows to LONDON.Now we have the MEDIA CENTRE wondered cos we dont have VARIETY any more,if this type of show will ever return?

I prefer radio to TV any time. I'm addicted to BBC Radio 4 and have it on all day. We also went to those radio shows in Manchester in the 60s. Good cheap (free in fact!!) entertainment

One of the Producers of those Shows was Jimmy Casey who was the son of comedian Jimmy Jewel.
There was a show each week with School Choirs competing cant remember the title,
Ken Dodd recorded a weekly Radio Show there.
By the way the Grumbleweeds started as a singing group with a bit of comedy thrown in
Their first Pro Gig was at the Winter Gardens Theatre Bournemouth, with Ken Dodd, Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson and Eric Delaney's Band.

Yes I remember all those. Sunday was the day when all the great shows were on,Rays a Laugh,Life With The Lyons,Round The Horn,Billy Cotton to name a few.
By the way didn't Wilfred Pickles say "Give him the money Barney" I might be wrong that name I am sure was in the show somewhere.

"Give him the money Barney" was my recollection too.

That Forces programme, "Two Way Family Favourites" was popular in our house. I also enjoyed "Workers Playtime" when I went to my grans for my dinner

Hi VINTY-Apologise as did try to send response but it disappeared into the ether somehow.
You refreshed my memory over Jimmy Casey. However I also remember a thinner bloke who I believe did some producing as well.
Please can you or someone help rewgards one of the acts am trying to get my mind round.
It involved a number of men and a small box that purported to have animals inside.I believe jimmy james or jimmy jewel was one of the characters? There was also a tall bloke who had a bit of a stutter who worked also alongside I think Hilda Baker and a gormless character who carried the box.Come on help me.

It disappeared on purpose. There was a triple quote of outrageous proportions and I'm not going to tidy those things up if posters can't edit their own posts to fix them. They'll disappear. :)
