I go along with that SWIMMER,it would be great if we could save all these sites
and in some cases put them to modern day use,it wouldnt be right to preserve and then keep a building vacant,i would love the gas ometer near the site of the old gas works to remain, but i dont know
of the safety risks involved,i believe religious organisations should be forced to keep property in
good state of repair, they have the cash ,dont let them fool you, that gets me back to the start of my thread, the sacred heart building, who owns it now ?

Gangad, Correct again. Bull's Head it is, was just reading about it.

Pilkingtons Office is a Listed Building, but again, who's looking after it?

Skyman, With regards to the Sacred Heart Presbytery,
must belong to the Archdiocese of Liverpool.
Sacred Heart was a lovely Church, that should have been a listed building.
Is this the one you mean Skyman?

Sure is Phyll,it looks just as bad from the front,i think it is a danger to passing pedestrians and trafic,
it didnt take long for the church to go because most of it was used again elsewhere so they must have got a few bob for that,
i hope not but if there is an accident in the future caused by that derilict building,, you saw it here first

reading all these letters my mind goes back to the1950 s. they should never have knocked down the old market hall etc it had character and most likley employed more people than the new set up

Skyman I agree with you it's an accident waiting to happen,I drive past that every week and it's getting more and more dangerous.
Jeb,I think most people would agree with you,I think it would have attracted more shoppers.

Next time your in town and in Cotham Street look up at the facade of Rexmore House, ie, the County Court Building. It's got to be the most ugly building in St. Helens.

I think the Gamble is quite an ugly duckling, its asymmetrical, doesnt seem to know where its facing and the room heights are too large, some of the detail is nice though.

One of the best buildings in town I think is the Prudential opposite the town hall.

Apart from the churches and maybe the Marks and Spencer building (or whats left of it) oh and half of Hall street, the rest could be bulldozed and not be mourned over.

I agree with you Jeb, I think the old covered market had character, and it would indeed have attracted more people to the town;if the shortsighted council had not demolished it. I also think the Capitol and the Savoy and unique features, which made you think you had been to a picture house, as they were called, and not a nonedescripts screen, with the rows of seats making all the viewing spaces the same.

I also agree, that Liverpool Arhdiosese is responsible for Sacred Heart church and pres.

another danger spot.
it is a restaurant of a kind ,it seems to do well on sundays i believe you have to take your own drinks
to have with your meal, the location is opposite lowehouse church on the corner, the roof is very steep ,
i noticed several loose slates and if and when they decide to move the pavement is where they will land
surely some department is responsible for checking potential black spots,if we the public can sense danger
im sure they can,

Yes, Ratty, the pub on the junction of Fleet Lane and Chancery Lane, the Bulls Head is the one earmarked for turning into flats. The Bears Paw (closed now) was the popular chippy in Ormskirk Street in the town centre and as for Swimmers reference to the convent, that's totally confused me...?

Hi Kizzy, Ratty said she had heard the Archdiosese was selling St Mary;s Blackbrook.
I said I hadn;t heard that. but I have not been up there for some years, so I don't even know if there is anyone living in the convent now. It used to be where the Sisters Of Mercy, had their base from where they taught at the infants school. Hope that clears it up for you Kizzy.
