Please note that the era you are talking about Labour was in power, not just in St Helens, but other northern towns also, towns that have also suffered the same fate!!

I don't think all the houses could have been saved but am sure some could. I cannot remember in detail but the ones where your family lived around Glover St did not seem to bad. I had relatives who lived in Pitt St, the house had one living room, kitchen, lean to on the back with a sink and toilet down the bottom of the yard and two bedrooms. I doubt if renovating it would have been practical to provide a decent sized family home. also a lot of the houses demolished had been privately rented for years and dreadfully neglected. Also Pitt St had three distinct ages of house and all the newer ones were left, one particular block was demolished apart from the last two which had been added on years after the original ones. demolition has been going on since time immemorial too. i suspect that the bottom end of Pitt St was originally Calico Sq and wonder when that and other places like Barber Court were demolished

I dont particularly blame the council or government as surely the intention to give people decent living accomodation is not a bad principle. I agree with the poster above who blames the town planners of the day, were there any nice buildings built anywhere at this time? Thankfully we are now back to building in more traditional styles but to me the vast open areas left by the demolition are completely wasted space. wouldn't it have been better if the houses had just been rebuilt on the same streets but a bit bigger and with gardens.

My point about technology is the chemicals used to inject damp courses etc were not about then nor were power tools in the way they are now.

Phyll. Now that we all know it's the former Sacred Heart site that link you added showed it in the wrong place. It's actually on the other side of Borough Rd, and was what I referred to in post #76 above

Hi Kizzy, Sorry, which link? I put so many on!

What do you mean it's in the wrong place? Is the map wrong?
I had put a link to a place/building, that I wasn't exactly sure where it was.
People replied, it was the old Sacred Heart School/Daisy Bank Nursery.
But after using Google map etc. I see where it is now. (Thanks Skyman)
I just looked at that link and it didn't show the ad or pic,
but when I looked again, it did, don't know why it's being temperamental?
So I found another link with an ad and pic. Is this the one you mean?
I am more confused now. Please explain.

The link in post 87 shows the pic of the school but the map shows it as on the other side of Borough Rd, the Croppers Hill side, think there are some sheltered houses there.

Click on the spot on the map, change it to satellite view, zoom in and move to the bottom corner and you will see the roof of the old presbytery with the school behind it between Banner St and Manning St

Thanks antonio, that's it exactly.
Phyll, sorry about your confusion - probably caused by an excess of link posting Posted Image

Thanks Antonio, Ah, so it was the map that was wrong, not by much.
I know where it is, been there many, many times.
I just didn't know what Kizzy meant. Thanks Kizzy.
Here's another link for you. Posted Image

My grandad went to that school. I remember him telling me he heard the explosion at the Kurtz Chemical works.
