On one of the main exit roads out of town you have to pass the old sacred heart presbytery ,its a danger to the public, loose slates, must by now be full of vermin, its location near the lights at liverpool road, borough rd,eccleston street. the church was dismantled quite a while ago ,but most of it was salvaged, im sure the owner could be made to remove it,not only is it dangerous , its just plain obscene, and does nothing for the area,

PS, DO YOU HAVE ANY SLUMS COME RAT HOLES NEAR YOU,

All that area where the flats (St.Thomas' Square?) used to be opposite St.Thomas' Church looks a right eyesore as well. I know it's supposed to be earmarked for development, but it's been like that for a long time now. I'm sure that, at the very least, Groundwork Trust could have turned it into a temporary Wildflower Seed area.

I think they are about to build on that, some fencing came down the other day, unless it was the wind, they keep changing thier mind though, at one time it was going to be gardens for the college and shop staff to have their lunch in, some chance eh, now its going to be shops and more restaurants/pubs

That old hotel on the top end of Boundary Road ( not far from Sacred Heart) gets me, its been a tip for years, but I passed it the other day and behold they are working on it, scaffold is up and the entrances all secured. Probably be DHSS though

Dont just look at commercial properties. If you go up Dentons Green into Kiln Lane, since they lopped all the elm trees look at the way people are looking after their properties.I appreciate much of the property is let/sublet and even when you go round the so called "posh areas" all you see are caravans in need of a good clean, lorries parked up,camper vans that have had better days, cars stood on bricks, curtains that need a good wash ,some just have a sheet hanging as a curtain. No I am not a mrs BOQUET!!but if people cant keep the outside of their property clean and tidy it doesnt say much for the inside.I think we should have a competition to see who could download the most grottiest house??

No. I think Ratty means the one at the top of Boundary Rd and Prescot Rd, which as Tessmop says was burnt down. It used to house the homeless. Eccleston Arms (Top Nogs) is still trading as a pub.

Drove down Merton Bank yesterday towards Haresfinch.
On the left is a yard wih a broken down Fence. what a blot on the Landscape.and further along some disused buildings
I thought the Council had powers to force owners to.tidy up a bit, I pity the poor residents in the area who have to put up with it every day,

Its about time something was done to the old Burkills Cafe at Carr Mill, I am sure the Council should be able to get the owners to tidy it up

You mean near the Gerrard? That used to be one of the most desirable areas in St Helens

Another grot spot is where the ford car salesroom and garage used to be,what's the reason behind leaving part of a demolition still standing?

I dont know a thing about vacant land ,but i would think
the land owner must be sill charged rates even though no building is
on the site,so if the councill have land that is not bringing in any revenue
someone is not doing their job,in the case of vacant market stalls
some one has got their sums wrong, must be better to reduce rates and have stalls occupied than having them vacant,

Excuse me for butting in to this toipic but the biggest eye sore in this town. in my humblr opinion. is the former Dole Office in College Street.
It was a blot on the landscape fdrom the moment was built

PS, DO YOU HAVE ANY SLUMS COME RAT HOLES NEAR YOU,

ALL the buildings put up in St Helens over the last 35 years are RAT HOLES. The place is an architectural BIG SHED disaster. This presbytery, although no beauty, is no worse than the new buildings will be in 10 years. Along with the Church, it was, I believe, put up by public prescription - mainly from the Irish poor- by reknowned architects PUGIN and PUGIN.
The problem is maintenance. So Yep, let's knock the bugger down along with any other old buildings including the TOWN HALL, St.Thomas's Church, Lowe House church, The Gamble Institute, Beechams Clock and ALL town centre buildings and houses that are more than 35 years old.
In fact let's Bulldoze the whole town centre - who needs it? Let's get rid of anything that smacks of history and folk memory and ancestoral toil. Lets pay Marie Rimmer et al the equivalent of 20 working men's salaries each plus expenses and get them to build another series of BIG SHEDS and architectural blandishments connected by one- way motorways interrupted only by car parks and pointless stainless steel needle sculptures. Lets put all pedestrians in subways. connecting the shopping sheds. Lets make sure that everything has inbuilt obsolescence of 10 years so that nothing has any connection with people and no one can build up a memory or sentiments or a sense of place. Let's rase everything rather than maintain anything.

Well said Cumbriakid, I know we have to move with the times, but let's preserve some of our historical heritage.
If I ever get back to St. Helens, there will be nothing from my past to show my Son!
