Widnes were given their ground by the council many years ago and got into trouble through buying success for a few years consequently being relegated.
The ground was more of a Dump than Saints until the Council took it back from the club and paid for it to be rebuilt with Ratepayers money from the residents of Widnes and Runcorn. the latter are still not happy about that,
If you have been watching Widnes for any length of time you will recall that the playing surface was terrible and the Stands were just a series of sheds donated to the Widnes club by Joe Bamber the Widnes Scrap man after they were removed from the Everite Asbestos Works in the 1950s.
At least the Saints own their fantastic new Stadium.
