Did you ever get in for nothing? It was simple. One of the gang would pay to go in and then immediately go and open the emergency exit into Duke Street to let the rest in

A mate of mine used to get in free most weeks, but with me being a Walter to his Dennis I only got in for free once. Our tecnique was different. We would go into the toilets on arriving then wait awhile. When we came out we made sure that whoever was on the door saw that we had come out of the toilet, then we would just walk in.If they thought you had been to the toilet they never asked to see your ticket. The trick was to look confident,a guilty face would soon be spotted.

Used to love the minors matinee - everybody banging their feet up and down on the floor before the film started, usually something like black beauty, good days indeed. Can remember queuing up round the block to get into the old cinema on bridge street - waited hours to get in to see jaws in the rain. Imagine that these days, they'd have a riot on their hands!

I absolutely loved the sat matinees, the ques for the cap and the savoy went for miles on matinee days, and I would imagine that the same was true of all the cinemas in the town. Banging our feet and booing the baddies and cheering the goodies. that was what sat pictures was all about.
