I am interested to know if the building once known as COWLEY HILL MATERNITY HOSPITAL closed in 1971 still exists & the street number at Cowley Hill Lane if it is still there.

Hi there are various Large buildings still in Cowley Hill Lane.A number of them near to what was Cowley Girls School are used by the NHS-I believe one was the old maternity hospital. However there is one building that was RUTLAND HOUSE VETS that is being demolished to be replaced with a more up to date vets structure.

I always thought that the buildings that housed Cowley Hill Maternity Hospital were those in between Rutland Street/Balker Drive (Balker Drive being the road at the side of the small park gate on Cowley Hill Lane).

You're right Ollie. Some of the buildings labelled Halton and St Helens Primary Care Trust were a part of that old hospital.

Ollie, once again you are correct.

The Hospital building is the large white house set back from Cowley Hill Lane. It is in Balker Drive and I was born there.

my daughter was born there 10th Nov 1971, discharged about the 24th Nov I have no recollection of hospital closing within a month, so 1971 closure questionable.

One of my sisters, next one down from me, was born there in 1953. Mum was so disgusted with the cockroaches that she saw, she wouldn't go near the place again after that. For my next sister, in 1956, she was back at Whiston. When it came to baby no.4 in 1960 - my brother - she opted for a 'home delivery'.
