Dunno any details about it being built etc wooder, but you are right about the coffin being placed on rollers. First time I was in the crem was in the early 1980's and it was as you said then. By the way, welcome to the site.

Couldnt seem to find anything except this and Im too young to remember, there may be something in the library but I couldnt see anything in the catalogue, maybe someone else will know.

The cemetary was opened in 1858 and the crematorium was opened in 1962. There is room to expand until the mid 1990,s. The crematorium is more popular but that has not always been true. Two to three people get buried a day on average but seven a day get cremated on average. There are three chapels there but only one is now used. St.Thomas's Well is supposed to cure blindness. The oldest grave is 1857 20 November, and the person was Marian Shanks. When the cemetary first opened to be buried cost £9.

Marian Shanks was buried 4 month before the cemetery was opened she was the wife of James Shank and was the sister of his first wife and the cost was £10/16/00 of which £1/16/00 cost for the vault
The first burial after the cemetery was opened was the of Emily Florance Marsh her father was John Marsh Mayor 1870/1872 the cost was £9/00/00

The first cremation I attended there was in 1979. I distinctly remember it was the first time I had seen a trolley used in church with the 'bearers' wheeling it, however when they got to the crem they had to carry on shoulders to line the coffin up with the catafalque before the (Pearl and Dean presents) curtains came down.

Did you know the people who live in those big houses opposite the cemetery can't be buried in there?
