Like I said, Harry Ireson was Foreman there before he retired. I worked there for two and half days then told him to stuff his job. He had may wages & P45 made up before I could empty the cab. Must have been glad to see the back of me. I was always a Bolshie sod even in those days. My mother worked as a cleaner and companion to old Tabern & his wife. They thought the world of her and her of them so I blotted my copybook with mother for a while.
Old Tabern told my mother how he started up as a night soil man. No one else wanted the job and he cleaned up,(forgive the pun). It wasn't long before he swapped his horse & cart for a lorry. That was between the wars and he stood by his dictum of: 'wears there's muck there's money'. They gave my mother some old family silver and she gave it to me, but it turned out to be Brittania Metal and worthless. That's old Tabern for you!
