Hi.just passed the old woolies today-saw an excellent advert for CAMERONS PRIVATE SECTOR JOBS.
Yet another "POUNDLAND STYLE SHOP"I suppose all these lads and girls on apprentice ship schemes will be employed there.Electrical apprentices can man the lightbulb stand, out of work nurses can man the first aid shelves, schoolteachers can man the BACK TO SCHOOL counter and our public servants can man the plastic bag and garden waste sacks counters.Office apprenticeships can man the office stationary shelves and I will man the cheap drinks counter if they have one.
Oh to be part of this new world!!!!

I don't see your problem. Most of the old shops have been bought by B&M who provide a similar service (useful, basic and cheap) to the old Woolworth stores

If we let these poundland style shops open then where will all the charity shops and takeaways, subway, pizza hut etc go.Perhaps we should build upwards and then we could have a skyscraper full of takeaways, charity shops and poundland style. Then we could demolish the empty shops and open up green spaces--oops sorry we would have to concrete them over first to make way for carparks.
Nope I wasnt an architect in an earlier life.

we have an abundance of charity shops and takeaways so I don't see an issue there, wait a couple more weeks when all the temporary Christmas shops sprout up! I so hate 'em! they will take over your lives if you let 'em but then some folk welcome them so you can't please all of the people all of the time, I personally support the charity shops and I like a bargain so the poundshops serve me well by saving me money on the same products sold in the big supermarkets at a much higher price.

I never leave bags outside-all our not needed items go direct to a local charity shop.We do use pounshops. What i hate is the way people push the "MALLS"for shopping. If you were to close your eyes and be transported to any of our major centres you couldnt say whether you were in Liverpool,Manchester,Leeds,Sheffield,Birmingham.
They are mirror images of each other. No individuality at all.No patter with the sales staff.Just rush in grab a few OVERPRICED BARGAINS that you dont really need.Rush back out.Its worse than watching paint dry.Even what were supposedly CAR BOOT SALES are now just stalls selling tapes, old electrical items, toilet rolls!!!and other tat.Years ago shopping used to be fun now we all look like zombies as we go from store to store.

these pound shops deserve to thrive, just look around at the big stores they can afford to sell things at half price at sale time.
if they cut their profit margin they wouldnt need to have sales.,and these stores that do BOGOF ,many items the people only want one but have to pay extra ,might be abit complicated but it would be a good idea if two mates did the shopping together then shared the bill,,it wont be long before funeral directors start BOGOF,,

The first poster said it was going to be a Poundland TYPE shop, not specifically a quid, I bet when you go into shops you'd string 'em up if you didn't get a penny change, tsk tskPosted Image

Turning the original title statement into a question. I was wondering what was woolies originally? It seems to be a interesting building.
Anyone know?

I can just about remember Woolies, as it was, in the 50's - with wooden floors (bit like the old Harts shop). I'd like somebody to verify for me that it had stairs going up - somewhere towards the rear of the shop on the left-hand side. Not sure if they led to an upper floor of the shop - or possibly to the offices.

In my mind, that huge weighing machine always seems to have been 'a bit of a fixture'
