95 years ago today, on 9th September 1916, the Prescot Civic War memorial was unveiled at the junction of West Street and Church Street, Prescot.

Dedicated at the height of the Somme battles, it was one of the first civic memorials in the UK.

On the same day, my great Uncle, James Nulty of Hill Street, Prescot, was killed in action while engaged in the Battle of Ginchy with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.

James Nulty and over 300 other men of Prescot who fell in the Great War are commemorated on my website at www.prescot-rollofhonour.info which also gives details of the memorial unveiling and dedication

Thanks Ste. I remember that there was a photo of Canon Mitchell in the old Parish Rooms, a rather stern looking chap as I recall

I have a picture of him here in my files but it is hard copy only at the moment.

I'll try to get it scanned/digitised over the weekend. It's from around 1901 so he's a bit younger and less stern looking, I suspect !!

Steve - that site is a work of art & you're to be commended. It blows me away each time I look at it.

Nice one

Thank you sir, you're very kind.

I dropped an email to the six councillors representing various parts of Prescot with the same text as in the first post of this thread.

I will keep you all informed of any replies - one so far.......

I did notice that when David Mitchell was on 'Who Do You Think You Are' the grave of Canon Mitchell was in the background of footage shot on the 'estate'. Can't remember where it is
