Hello fellow forum posters! My Great Great Grandfather, Robert G. Brook owned an Ironmonger Business and lived in Wolverhampton House on Church Street (formerly Raven Street), in the mid to late 1800's. He was also a self-taught professional photographer, was a councillor for Hardshaw Ward for several terms, was a world traveler, founded the first art exhibit in St. Helens, was president of the local association for science as well as a high-standing member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and devoted much of his life to St. Helens and its people.
His Ironmongery business commissioned tokens that were used for trade when the British Mint was unable to keep up with the production demands for small coins. These tokens are difficult to locate, and I would appreciate if anyone could point me in a direction to obtain any, or if you have any that you would be willing to part with I would be happy to hear your offer to purchase.
The tokens are clearly marked with "RG Brook Ironmongers", "Wolverhampton House", and "St. Helens" on the one side with an image of Queen Victoria on the other side. I believe they are made of brass or copper, and are farthing size.
I will be visiting St Helens during the final week of July 2011 and will pursue my search then as well as once again visiting Wolverhampton House and the Rendezous Bar located there.
I hope someone can help me! You can email me at rgbrook@hotmail.com
Sincerely,
Robert G. Brook
