I went to this event Phyll but didn't stay long as Chris Coffee was showing photo's that I've seen a hundred times.
Tom Preston (Phd) of St. Helens Libraries and History services was there as well giving a presentation on the music halls of St. Helens. He shown me the original architects plans for the Thatto Heath Empire cinema. Interestingly he also had plans for a similar building at the bottom of Scholes lane which never got built. Now here is a challenge to all our sleuths. Both Tom and I have been searching years for a photograph of the Thatto Heath Empire and to date have been unsuccessful. Can anyone help?

According to an article in St.Helens Star, the Thatto Heath Empire opened in 1912 and closed in 1963. Whereabouts was it? It's so recent, that there just HAS to be a photo of it somewhere.

Ollie, the Empire was almost next door to the Springfield Hotel. Following its demolishion the Empire filling station was built and owned by Pinner & Webb. It then became a second hand car dealership and then a tyre depot which it still is.

Pinner and Webb,National station hahahahahaha, the thick gets.In the 60's when I was a scooter boy, they had a special pre mixed scooter bay,for two stroke with a hand pump.At night they just took the handle off.Being a good mechanical apprentice yours truly had no difficulty in making a handle to fit, free petrol for the best part of two yrs.I even sold the handle with the scooter.:roflmao:

DD - I don't want this to sound too much like trying to teach my grandma to suck eggs, BUT has anybody asked at Thatto Heath Library to see if they've got a pic of the old cinema?

Or maybe an old photo of the Springfield Hotel - might just have the cinema in it as well :dunno: .
